Know the difference between being friendly vs. Being friends with students. Curriculum things you won’t know until you do. As far as classroom management goes, do what works for you. Also understand that everyone struggles, and you should go to your team for support and coaching. You will foster relationships with students, parents, and other teachers as well. It is rewarding when students make progress, and something clicks as well as when you see the difference you are making. I once had a conversation with my school counselor telling him that “I can’t do this...” He encouraged me to get support. I co-taught a classroom at the time, and he told me that it is okay for it not to be what I thought. When it comes to dealing with difficult parents, it is most important to listen and not be defensive.

6. What changes, if any, would you make to the educational system? Consider various aspects of education reform, funding, state assessments, etc...

Before we can teach kids or students with acting out behaviors, we need to get to the root cause. If every school had a transitional room, (well-staffed that kids could learn how to be in the classroom), parents might become a little more invested in their kid’s behavior. We have slowly taken the responsibilities away from parents from the time they take them home as a baby. I think that we should be educating parents better before their children are at school age.

5. What does professionalism mean to you? What qualities do you seek in a new teacher? How can I “stand out” during the application, interview, and hiring process after I earn my teaching license?

The way you conduct yourself as well as having a set of ethics and morals. You can look professional in nice clothes but not be professional otherwise. Professionalism to me also means having integrity. I look for someone having a heart for the kids. The teacher needs to have the desire and ability for working with others as well as being flexible and organized. To stand out in an interview, really share your vision, and show your heart. Have examples of how to build relationships with different students. It is important to know why you want to teach and articulating that.
