Those industries did very well and accumulated capital in this industry. The northern economy industrialized rapidly during the first couple of decades in the nineteenth century. There were attempts at trying to fix the economy differences but nothing worked. The south wanted slavery, the north wanted free states. War happened because the north wanted to end the Confederate States of America and have the seceding states back in the union.
