Review:

During week one the AED1260 looked at the history of the Arts, Arts in society, Tableaus and the Elements of Drama.

Elements of Drama: Space, Contrast, Focus, Mood, Time, Symbol, Tension.

The website above had a really interesting Drama activity for students. Giving each student a card and they must freeze in a position representing the card they were given; other students then guess what is being acted by that student.

Reflections:

Has anything particular resonated with you?

What resonated with me the most is the deep and longstanding impact of the Arts on society. Throughout history, the Arts have not only been a medium for personal expression but also a powerful tool for social change, cultural preservation, and community building. The idea that drama, as an element of the Arts, can reflect societal values, challenge norms, and inspire empathy is particularly compelling. It highlights the transformative power of drama to influence and educate both performers and audiences.

Have you discovered something about the Arts and/or drama that you were not aware of before?

One fascinating discovery is the concept of the Elements of Drama, which are crucial components that make a performance effective and engaging. These elements include role, character, relationships, situation, voice, movement, space, and time. Understanding how these elements interact and contribute to a dramatic piece has given me a deeper appreciation for the complexity and craft involved in creating impactful drama. Prior to this, I had not fully considered how each element plays a vital role in conveying a story and evoking emotions from the audience.

You are encouraged to conduct some research find out more about any of the materials mentioned this week.

In researching more about the Elements of Drama, I found that these elements are foundational not only in traditional theatre but also in contemporary media such as film and television. For instance, the use of space and movement can significantly alter the dynamics of a scene, creating tension or highlighting relationships. Additionally, voice and character development are essential in making fictional characters believable and relatable. This research has deepened my understanding of how drama techniques are applied across various forms of storytelling.

Can you remember yourself as a young learner?

As a young learner, I remember being fascinated by stories and the various ways they could be told. Participating in school plays and drama activities allowed me to step into different roles and explore various aspects of human experience. This hands-on engagement not only made learning enjoyable but also enhanced my communication skills, confidence, and empathy.

How might primary students learn in drama?

Primary students learn in drama through experiential and interactive methods. Here are some ways this can happen:

Role-Playing and Improvisation: By assuming different roles, students can explore perspectives and develop empathy. Improvisation activities encourage quick thinking and creativity.

Storytelling and Script Writing: Creating their own stories and scripts helps students understand narrative structure and character development. It also enhances their writing and organizational skills.

Games and Warm-Up Activities: Drama games and warm-ups can build teamwork, concentration, and physical awareness. These activities are often fun and engaging, making learning feel like play.

Performances and Presentations: Performing in front of peers helps students build confidence and public speaking skills. It also allows them to receive constructive feedback.

Integration with Other Subjects: Drama can be integrated with subjects like history, literature, and social studies, making these subjects more relatable and engaging. For example, acting out historical events or scenes from a book can deepen understanding and retention.

Reflective Discussions: After drama activities, discussions can help students reflect on their experiences, what they learned about themselves and others, and how the drama elements helped convey the story.

Review:

This week looked at Voice, Readers Theatre and Story.

Reading aloud + Drama = Readers Theatre.

This can promote reading, improve comprehension, and communication, makes learning more fun and engaging.

Reflection:

Can you reflect on yourself as a learner?

As a learner, I've realized that my engagement with drama activities such as Voice, Readers Theatre, and Story has significantly enhanced my understanding and appreciation of the subject. These activities have allowed me to explore different facets of expression and creativity, helping me to become more confident in presenting ideas and narratives. I’ve found that drama encourages active participation and requires me to think critically and creatively. This hands-on approach to learning has made the concepts more tangible and memorable.

Is your opinion of drama changing? If so, in what way(s)?

My opinion of drama is indeed changing. Initially, I saw drama primarily as a form of entertainment or a creative outlet. However, through activities like Readers Theatre and storytelling, I now recognize it as a powerful educational tool. Drama encourages not just the development of communication skills but also critical thinking, empathy, and teamwork. I appreciate how it brings stories and voices to life, making abstract concepts more concrete and accessible.

What do you think is meant by the concept that students learn by symbolically representing their world through drama?

The concept that students learn by symbolically representing their world through drama means that drama provides a means for students to express their understanding of the world in a symbolic, rather than literal, manner. Through role-play, storytelling, and dramatic interpretation, students can explore complex ideas, emotions, and social situations in a safe and imaginative environment. This symbolic representation allows students to process and internalize information in a way that is meaningful and personal, enhancing their cognitive and emotional development.

How does drama foster collaboration and cooperation?

Group Activities: Many drama exercises require group participation, whether it's performing a Readers Theatre piece, creating a story, or engaging in role-play. This necessitates working together, listening to each other, and valuing each member's contributions.

Shared Goals: Drama often involves collective objectives, such as producing a play or telling a story, which encourages students to cooperate and support one another to achieve a common goal.

Communication Skills: Effective drama practice relies on clear and respectful communication. Students learn to articulate their ideas and listen to others, fostering a collaborative atmosphere.

Problem-Solving: Drama activities often present challenges that require joint problem-solving, whether it’s interpreting a character, creating a scene, or improvising dialogue. This nurtures a sense of teamwork and shared responsibility.

Empathy and Understanding: Engaging in drama helps students to step into others' shoes, promoting empathy and a deeper understanding of different perspectives. This empathy is crucial for effective collaboration and cooperation.

Review:

Week 5 focused on Movement skills, Deepening the understanding of the Elements of Dance, Learning through Dance, and Dance in cultures.

Reflection:

How do the practical activities and unit information inform your personal understanding of the use of dance as an expressive learning process through which educators can facilitate creativity in primary students?

Movement Skills Development: Practical activities involving movement skills highlight how dance can improve physical coordination, spatial awareness, and motor skills in primary students. By engaging in various dance movements, students learn to control their bodies and express emotions physically, enhancing their kinesthetic learning.

Elements of Dance: Understanding the elements of dance—such as space, time, dynamics, and relationships—allows educators to teach students how to use these elements creatively. For instance, by manipulating these elements, students can explore different ways to express ideas and emotions, fostering creativity and critical thinking.

Learning Through Dance: Dance as a medium for learning integrates multiple disciplines. Activities that incorporate storytelling through dance help students connect with literature and history, making these subjects more engaging and memorable. This interdisciplinary approach promotes a deeper understanding and retention of academic content.

Cultural Awareness: Exploring dance in different cultures exposes students to diverse traditions and practices, promoting cultural awareness and sensitivity. Practical activities that involve learning traditional dances from various cultures help students appreciate the richness of cultural diversity and encourage respect and empathy.

Creativity and Expression: Dance allows students to express themselves in ways that words may not. Through improvisation and choreographed routines, students can explore their emotions, ideas, and identities. This creative expression is crucial for emotional development and can boost confidence and self-esteem.

Do you have strategies for managing pressure as you move through this unit? What are they?

Yes, I have developed several strategies to manage pressure during this unit:

Time Management: Setting a clear schedule and breaking down tasks into manageable steps helps me stay organized and reduces the feeling of being overwhelmed. Prioritizing tasks based on deadlines and importance ensures that I stay on track.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practicing mindfulness through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga helps me stay focused and calm. These techniques are particularly useful when I feel stressed or anxious.

Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity, including dance, not only improves my physical health but also helps release stress and boosts my mood. It serves as a healthy outlet for managing pressure.

Seeking Support: Collaborating with peers and seeking support from instructors when needed provides a sense of community and shared experience. Discussing challenges and sharing strategies with others can be incredibly reassuring and motivating.

Self-Reflection: Taking time to reflect on my progress and celebrate small achievements helps maintain a positive outlook. Acknowledging the effort I put into my work reinforces my commitment and reduces pressure.

What has been the most important personal realisation in the last few weeks in this unit?

The most important personal realization has been understanding the profound impact of the arts on the whole development in primary students.

Why is it the most important?

This realization is crucial because it highlights the multifaceted benefits of integrating dance into the curriculum. Recognizing that dance is not just a physical activity but also a tool for cognitive, emotional, and social development has broadened my perspective on education. Here’s why it’s important:

Holistic Development: Dance promotes holistic development by engaging students physically, mentally, and emotionally. It supports cognitive functions such as memory and concentration, emotional expression, and social skills through group activities and collaboration.

Engagement and Motivation: Understanding the impact of dance on student engagement and motivation underscores its value in creating an inclusive and stimulating learning environment. When students are actively involved and enjoy the learning process, their overall academic performance improves.

Cultural Competence: Appreciating the role of dance in cultural education fosters a more inclusive classroom. It encourages students to respect and value diversity, which is essential in today’s multicultural society.

Creative Expression: Recognizing the importance of creative expression in personal growth and learning underscores the need to provide students with opportunities to explore and develop their creativity. This is essential for nurturing innovative and confident individuals.

Review:

During Week 11 AED1250 students focused on the construction of productions & being an audience member.

Reflection:

Looking back - what was your favourite activity in the unit?

I thoroughly enjoyed the dance activities in this unit: exploring Australian Dance Companies and watching their performances and repertoires.

I also enjoyed using simply steps to create dances like the phone number activity that was a very entertaining activity that would create so many unique dances.

Has anything surprised you about teaching dance, drama and or media arts to primary students?

One surprising aspect was how quickly primary students adapt to and embrace the arts. Their enthusiasm and willingness to participate exceeded my expectations. I was also surprised by their ability to express complex emotions and narratives through dance and drama. Their natural creativity and uninhibited approach often led to unique and insightful performances.

Have there been opportunities to express your emotions through this unit through the tasks? Explain.

I think so, every activity is something that allows you to give a unique response or opinion meaning everyone could express their feelings. I also think it was a judge free zone so all activity responses could be honest.

Which dance, drama or media arts strategy are you keen to try out with a group of primary students?

I am very keen to try Dance and Drama strategies with the students as I find them more engaging, I have started a list of activities I am excited to try with them including:

Tableaux's

Mime

dance by numbers

Can you comment on the process of devising a dance, drama and media arts presentation

Concept Development: It starts with brainstorming and developing a central theme or story. This stage is crucial for setting the direction and objectives of the presentation.

Planning and Structure: Once the concept is clear, the next step is to outline the structure. This includes deciding on the sequences, transitions, and key moments in the performance.

Creative Exploration: This stage involves experimenting with different movements, dialogues, and media elements. Students are encouraged to explore and refine their ideas, often through improvisation and feedback sessions.

Rehearsal: After refining their ideas, students rehearse their parts to ensure smooth execution. This stage focuses on timing, coordination, and expression.

Technical Integration: For media arts, this includes incorporating sound, lighting, and digital elements. It requires careful coordination to ensure all technical aspects enhance the performance.

Performance: The final stage is the presentation itself. Students perform their devised piece, showcasing their creativity and hard work.
