Teachers choice: Tom Buchanan

 Tom Buchanan attends the University of Yale and that is where he meets Nick. Tom ends up playing on the football team and makes a few enemies. Through the eyes of Nick, Tom Buchanan was a very wealthy man and had a threatening appearance. "He was a sturdy straw-haired man, with a hard mouth and a supercilious manner". He had a personality where he thought that he was better than everyone else and was pleased by the fact of  people knowing he had money. Tom Buchanan was also very unfaithful to his wife and wasn't smart either. While Tom Buchanan reads a book to Daisy, she is amazed that he is reading a book to her but he doesn't understand what he is reading.  Nick thinks that Tom Buchanan likes to spend his days attempting to recover past magnificence from his football days. I would say that the best color Tom Buchanan relates to is Black. I say black because it is a color that is more on the dark side and tends to sound like a harsh/ mean color which is kind of like Tom Buchanan. They are similar to each other because Tom Buchanan has a threatening appearance, aggressive, cheats on his wife, and thought that he was better than everyone else.

Some adjectives i would describe Nick Carraway as would be... tolerant, inclined to reserve judgement, and honest.  “This was untrue. I am not even faintly like a rose. She was only extemporizing, but a stirring warmth flowed from her, as if her heart was trying to come out to you concealed in one of those breathless, thrilling words.” This quote shows that Nick Carraway was being honest. This shows he was being honest because he knew he didn't look/feel like a rose. After the party, Jordan wants to go home since she has a golf tournament the following day. Once Nick leaves, Tom and Daisy suggest that Nick and Jordan should be together. Nick views himself as having a better sense of “decencies” than most other people. “In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. The fact that Gatsby is partners with Meyer Wolfsheim in a company, indicates that he may have amassed his fortune illegally. Gatsby also tells Nick about his past and how his family was very wealthy but they passed away and inherited his wealth. When Gatsby is asked where he is from in the Midwest, he says San Francisco. This indicates that he is most likely lying. Gatsby also discusses his achievements with Nick and claims to have served in World War One and earned medals. He also shows Nick a photo and a medal he took in Oxnard...Nick is wary of Gatsby and does not believe he is telling the truth, as shown by his actions.”He and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That's one of his little stunts. I picked him for a bootlegger the first time i saw him and i wasn't far wrong” (Fitzgerald, 143). Gatsby compares it with Daisy, and in Chapter1, he searches for it in the dark as a guiding light to help him find his destination. Beyond the color green, I think it stands for moving forward, money, and being wealthy . At first, the color green symbolizes money, materialism, and high position. The color green is associated with Gatsby's character to emphasize his unsatisfied desire to regain Daisy, his love. He also told Nick that he inherited his wealth after his parents/upbringing passed away young. Once Gatsby lost everything during the World War I global panic, he recouped his losses through success in the oil and drug companies. He also mentioned to Nick that he grew up in a rich Southwest family of Oxford graduates. Soon enough, Nick finds out that Gatsby was actually lying about everything. Gatsby sailed around the world with Dan Cody so that he can learn how wealthy people act. Unfortunately, Dan Cody passes away and Gatsbys’ fortune was most likely amassed by illicit dealings with the Hebrew gang in New York. James Gatz also mentioned that he “grew up in a wealthy family” but, actually was born and raised on such a small farm in North Dakota. For a few weeks, he worked as a janitor at a community college to help pay for his schooling. This conduct indicates that James Gatz is not just a compulsive liar but that he persists in the delusional world that he created in his head.

I say this because all he wanted was for Daisy to tell Tom that she loves him more. But, instead she tells Tom that she loves them both. Gatsby is devastated by this. Yes, Daisy does love Gatsby but, In my opinion I think that Daisy is confused on who she loves more, or is scared that if she leaves Tom, her career will change drastically. Tom says that he does love Daisy regardless of the things he does because she is in the same social class as him. Nick doesn't seem to love anyone other than his cousin Daisy. I know this because he’s always there for her and is always giving her advice. 

Love is depicted in The Great Gatsby in a very unromantic way. No love appears to last, and no love appears to survive the book. Daisy couldn't wait to marry Gatsby, the man she claimed to love, so she married Tom, a man she no longer loves. Love seems to be an unattainable dream for the characters: something they believe in but cannot achieve.

The eyes on the book cover could represent Nick’s eyes, saying that he knew/seen everything going on in the story. Also, the eyes could represent us (the audience) since we saw everything that was going on in the book. They could also represent a girl in the story like Daisy, since the person on the cover of the book is wearing red lipstick. I say this is Daisy since she killed Myrtle and since she was also one of the main characters in the story. On the bottom of the book, it looks like a lot of different things combined together. It also looks like there is a fire, and I think the fire represents chaos and shows us that this book has a lot of different images to imagine. I also see that there is a moon on the cover, this is telling us that there is also light in the darkness. I can also see that there are a lot of different colors, probably telling us that everyone is different in their own way.

Just like how Daisy had a hard time trying to decide between Tom or Gatsby. In the book, Daisy wasn't being treated fairly by her husband. Tom would constantly cheat on Daisy and soon enough she started to do it back to him, with Gatsby. I have been in a situation before where I have gotten cheated on and although the thoughts of revenge come to my head, I know right from wrong and I like to think about being the bigger/better person at the end of the day. This is the difference between Daisy and I because she decided to go down to Tom’s level and cheat. Soon enough, Tom finds out about what Daisy did and he is just as disappointed as Daisy was when she found out he was cheating on her. “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife” (Fitzgerald, 137). This quote is showing that Tom knows what Daisy did and is angry/jealous about it. He is inferring that “Mr. Nobody” is Gatsby.

These books are very different in terms of content, but they share a common topic of perception. “The Great Gatsby” was the first novel that shaped me as a person and “To Kill a Mockingbird” is the second book. My understanding would be weaker than it is now if it weren't for these books. The ideas in this text remind me of the book called, “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I say this because they both rely on the idea that the way things and people are seen is not always the truth. Daisy came off as such a nice woman in the beginning of the story, but overtime we started to see her true colors and she was actually a user towards Gatsby. I feel like she only led him on because she wanted to get back at Tom for what he did to her. The ones who appear extravagant in “The Great Gatsby” are the polar opposite, yet in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the people who appear to be the most damaging are the most compassionate. This happens frequently in life, and it has taught me the value of being truthful to myself and others.

Because rich people could have whatever they wanted, social class was a huge element of the past, just like it was in the book. Poor people had a lot more problems and had to deal with a lot more hardships. People also did shady things for people back then to gain money because they didn't have any other options. Much like Gatsby's  sketchy work for Mr. Wolfsheim.
       Because I believe socioeconomic status still plays a significant role in life, the issues in the novel are relevant today. It isn't as prevalent as it formerly was, when being wealthy essentially meant being at the top of the social ladder. In today's society, I believe it is different since the world has changed dramatically since then, and wealth isn't the only factor that may propel you up the social ladder. People who are impoverished now are similar to those in the book because they suffer the same challenges and live a similar existence. I also believe that people now conduct shady activities for money because they have no other option or because they believe it is simple.
