Please post a video or image related to RTI and explain the connection. For example, you may want to post a video of how RTI works in a math class, if this is an area of interest to you. Or perhaps, you might post an image of an assessment that RTI utilizes for a particular reason. Remember to make sure you explain why you chose your image/video. Also, please note any differences between your example and the definition we looked at in class.

This video is a charter school in Atlanta, Georgia that has implemented a RTI program in the school. I chose this video because it showed how much of an impact tiered supports can have for the entire school. The school's RTI program starts in K-2 where they have an hour long "intervention block" for children who are placed in tier two. Children who are placed in tier three have the chance to go to the "math lab" and "literacy center" for enrichment time (gym, music, etc.) rather than missing out on their classroom instruction time. They provided the statistic that since implementing their RTI program, their qualification for special education classes has dropped from 13% to 8%. This video showed a good example of what we discussed in class with the three tiers and being able to move between tiers. It also talked about collaboration between teachers which we talked about in class.

The RTI video I have chosen describes the partnership between American Reading Company and the Oxford Area School District, my home district. The American Reading Company introduced RTI reading instruction to our schools in 2010, which I got to experience first hand. My mom was the RTI/IST specialist in the building at the time and worked very closely with this program. The school used this program primarily for Tier 1 core instruction. Tier 2 students, however, did get more frequent conferencing one on one, along with action plans to target their instructional needs. A primary goal of this program is to meet the needs of the students in the classroom with instruction, rather than intervention and special ed- which aligns with the goals of RTI we have discussed in class.

Samantha Serafino The video I have chosen is showing how RTI is implemented at Boulevard Elementary school in New York. I chose this video because I plan on working at an elementary school. This video show how this specific school implements RTI by focusing on each grade level and showing how effective it is for them. They start out looking at the whole school and meet with a team to communicate what they see. They then go grade by grade, keeping communication, which is key. They feel that a good core reading program is crucial for RTI to be implemented effectively to meet a majority of the kids. This video discusses the three tiers which is the same in our notes. Communication and working as a team which we talked about in class is also very crucial at this elementary school.

After watching a few different videos and trying to find one that stood out to me I picked this one below. This video is about a school in Georgia that has implemented RTII as a school wide curriculum. The video breaks it down into every tier and explains how its ran. Every student receives the tier 1 “Universal learning” then in the mornings, there is an “intervention block” for an hour for tier 2 students who need that extra time. Then, finally, for tier 3 they have a literacy center and math lab where they receive targeted learning/ teaching techniques that hit their specific deficits. This video later mentioned that implementing this RTII program lowered the number of student who receive special education. This video really explained the different steps of RTII and connected to our class. The idea of all teachers working together to reach the students’ needs was a key concept talked about in this video. They all set goals for these students and strived to help them reach them. One last phrase that really stuck with me was one teacher said “30-40% of the students in the math lab (tier 3) are only here about a year and then exit to a lessened amount of support.” This was neat to hear and prove that this program actually works.

I chose this video because I really liked seeing the behind the scenes planning that goes on to effectively enact Response to Intervention. I really enjoyed hearing them talk specifically about each student. It really showed how intently the teachers are watching their students' progress and motivation. The teachers talked about making sure every student felt comfortable in their learning environment, and that they felt empowered by moving around the building. The collaboration between the teachers was critical to make sure every student was in the best learning environment they could be in.

This video highlights the implementation of RTI at an elementary school in New York. Since I want to work in an elementary classroom, this was applicable and relatable for me. Since RTI is focused on data, this elementary school can prove how effective their program is for each grade level and each classroom by showing the data they have collected. Communication is highlighted throughout the video because without solid communication in the school, the implementation of RTI would not be as effective. Teachers need to be able to communicate what they are seeing in their classrooms and where the need lies for each student. Like we discussed in class, RTI allows for students to have their individual needs met in their regular classroom, rather than being given a label to get them services that extend outside of their regular classroom. It is individualized with the three tier system, like we discussed, and meets the needs of every student. As someone interested in special education, RTI is something so important that teachers should know about and be able to implement in their classroom, as every learner is unique.

What I liked about this picture is that no two grades have the same RTI time and outside providers can move from grade to grade providing push-in or pull-out services. Students can be grouped by their individual needs across different teachers within their grade. I chose this picture because when I had field last semester my teacher was all about a strict schedule and showing the schedule for the day. She also focused a lot on the different Tiers. These reflects the same Tiers we learned about in class on Thursday of last week. We also talked about structure and communication which is resembled in this picture!

This video is describing RTI at a Charter School in Georgia. I really enjoyed this video because it explained how successful RTI was once it was implemented school wide. The video talked about the tiers and how from K-2 they have an hour in the morning for Tier 2 students. They stop this in 2nd grade because their goal is by 3rd grade most students are already included into Tier 1. The video also talked about how a big part of the Tiers is the schools' math lab and literacy center. I enjoyed this because I would love to be the literacy center teacher. The video said that most students send one year in the lab or center and then exit back to Tier 1. This video related to what we said in class and I enjoyed it so much because it discussed how useful RTI can be when implemented correctly and the whole school is working together to help each student.

The video that I picked is one that talks about the importance of communicating when implementing RTI in classrooms. The video takes us through how Meyer Elementary School implements this program. Meyer Elementary school said that there is only a small gap now between its highest and lowest achieving students. I chose this video because it not only gives the teachers opinions on RTI, but it also lets us hear from students and parents. I enjoyed how this video talked about how each teacher needs to come together and be one. This video also takes us through the different tiers. It tells us the differences between them, and how often the students will be receiving their services. Another thing I liked about this video was that it put an emphasis on interventions through technology. When a child is struggling in a classroom all of the time it starts to affect them. With the RTI program implemented Myer Elementary School was able to see student’s confidence grow.

The teachers do such a good job of explaining and stressing the different tiers and their components. They additionally stress the importance of teamwork between general education teachers and specialists throughout each of the tiers. It also discusses how the individual attention and interventions benefit each individual student. The teachers all just want to provide the students with the opportunity to succeed in any way they can and only have a 4% population of students who receive special education services due to the RTI implementations this school involves.

The video that I choose is a video that explains how a school in Michigan implements RTI across an entire grade level in order to meet all student needs. The video shows how all of the teachers for the grade work together and plan how to implement the three tiers of response to intervention. It explained how students move around throughout the day in order of their specific needs to be met. We can also see how parents feel about the program as well. In an interview, a mother of a student explained that her son struggled with reading so he went to a group of students with similar reading abilities. When children of the same level work together, they feel equal and not intimidated to learn. I liked this video because it showed how teacher collaboration can have a great impact on student learning for the better. Having more than on teacher implementing RTI makes it more effective and helps to get children back up to tier one and out of the other tiers with small group and individual instruction.

An SLP explains an SLP's role in the RTI process, the advantages and disadvantages of RTI, and how SLPs collaborate with teachers. I chose these videos because I want to become an SLP, and it is interesting to see how I may need to incorporate RTI into my work. I remember learning in class that students who fall into tier 2 may require support staff, which may include a speech therapist. I am happy to connect my personal career path and interests to RTI and the education field. There is a lot of overlap and collaboration. Contrary to our definition of RTI, it seems at this particular school, there is not a lot of active collaboration with RTI. The video explains what RTI is, the three tiers, how the teachers work together to help facilitate the best learning experience for children, and how the program helps the children. The video makes a point that the RTI program in this elementary school empowers children to take charge of their learning and helps students to not get lost in the shuffle of the regular classroom. The video emphasizes how much the teachers need to work together in order to make RTI successful in the school. The video also emphasizes that RTI helps students in other areas aside from academically.

This video takes place in a charter school in Georgia. This video I found interesting because they only use the tiers in K-2. They do this because most of the students are supposed to be in tier one by the time they reach grade three. They make a point of trying to keep the students in the general ed classroom as much as possible so they offer a literacy and math center for students that need it. The catch is that these students then have to switch out of one of their enrichment classes like music or robotics. They still are having enrichment, but these are different options. I liked this video because the way they are working with these children is very motivating and fun. They are working very hard in the centers, but the methods are great. This video is also great because they really map out the amount of improvement made in the school thanks to their RTI program. This video matches up with the material from class because it proves how useful RTI can be when used properly.

The video explains the three tiers of the RTI process and it explains how the school goes about working with children in those tiers. Tier one (Universal Instruction) is in the regular education classroom, tier two (Intervention Blocks) happens for an hour in the morning, and tier three (Literacy Center & Math Lab) happens when classes go to different specials like music or gym, the tier three students can use that time to go to the literacy center or the math lab. I really like this video because they talk about the way they implemented the RTI process did not work the first year, they were not closing the gap. They were taking the students out of their core subject classes and weren't finding it beneficial. I like this video because it talks about how they made a change to make it work better. They gave the students the option to go to the Literacy Center or Math Lab during their specials, in doing this the school viewed a close in the gap. They use a lot of movement in their activities because it helps the students focus, have fun, and since they are missing a special it is nice to incorporate that into their day. These classrooms seem like such a safe space for the students and the students seem to be having so much fun. One thing that is different from the model is that tier 2 is an hour in the morning and in tier 3 they meet in small groups, not one-on-one.

The video I chose shows an RTI meeting for first grade students who have been identified as struggling readers. The reason I chose this video was because I was interested in hearing and seeing how a typical RTI meeting goes, and first grade is also one of the grades I am Interested in teaching. In this meeting the intervention specialist and teachers work together to create a focus strategy for the struggling readers they have identified. They first express their concerns with the struggling readers, as well as common things they have noticed such as reading through errors, not trying to break words apart, and relying too much on “tolds”. Then they begin to come up with different strategies that could potentially help these students depending on what their struggle is. Though I never have seen an RTI meeting I cannot say for sure if this is truly how an meeting would go, or if they’re missing something, but overall I found it interesting and helpful.

This video follows students at Iron Spring Elementary School. The video explains the process and approaches that the school takes when working with students that require academic interventions. The video outlines clearly how Teacher's, special education teachers, specialists, and parents are all involved in the RTI process. Using the model that was outlined in class, students are observed in a Tier 1 setting and are evaluated for reading skills and phonics. If intervention is required, students are pulled from the regular classroom and moved to a Tier 2 classroom where they receive extra help and practice with reading, spelling and phonics. If further remedial help is required, students are moved on to Tier 3. The principal of the school is also involved with this process which I thought seemed encouraging to students. Response to Intervention seems to be seen in a very positive light at this elementary school which I think this sends a powerful message to their students.

I choose a video that shows RTI being implemented into a middle school out in Colorado. The video includes teachers, specifically 7th grade, talk about their schedule and how things have changed for the better. For example, the teachers have two prep periods a day with one being solely for meeting with their team members to talk about their students and their data. The teachers also talk about how the RTI model helps with implementing interventions that help the students with both their academic and behavioral challenges and these interventions are clearly working. Students are also coming forward saying that they like coming to school now whereas they did not like school before the RTI model was put into place. The Response to Intervention model has really helped this school move forward and has given the teachers a better sense of community and more resources to use in the classroom.

The video that I found, not only talks about Response to Intervention, but also talks about the collaborative aspect of it as well, which I found interesting. I think it is important for teachers to remember that they don’t need to do this alone, and that they have other teachers as resources, and I think that this video did a good job addressing. For instance, the teachers would discuss their Tier 2 and Tier 3 students with each other, and discuss the progress that each student was making. They also offered support and help to each other in ways, such as offering to work with other teachers’ students, if their “small group” was getting to large. You could just tell that these are teachers who enjoy their job, and care about their students, and even their colleagues’ students. I also liked how they put an effort on trying to keep students in their classroom whenever possible. They did mention how they sometimes pull students from the classroom, with one student saying that they like being able to go to a “new classroom”, and others saying that it “empowers” students and makes them feel more in charge of their schedule. So ultimately, I think it depends on the individual student, and whatever is best for their learning.

The teachers explain the different tiers very well which gave me a better understanding of them, Also, the video shows how well all the teachers work together. RTI takes a lot of teamwork and support from teachers, and this video really shows that. I really liked how this video talked about all the different groups and how every couple weeks the groups change due to a students progress and moving from tier to tier. You can see how the teachers want to provide every student with the best opportunity to succeed.

This video is from charter school in Georgia who has implemented the RTI system school wide. As all RTI systems, all the students received first tier intervention which is labeled as universal learning. Tier two or intervention blocks happens for an hour in this school in the morning. Tier 3 was in the literacy center and math lab which was implemented when specials were going on or classes were switching for students. They could use this time to go to the center or lab to receive the extra support they need. As much as pulling students out of another subject to receive help in another subject area happens in schools, I do not like seeing that students miss specials. Special classes such as gym, music, and art are thing students look forward to or excel in. This could be the case for regular subject areas as well. Pulling students out of the classroom is a tough thing to do, but necessary for the students to get back on track. I like how the school stuck with the program even though the first year they saw no improvements. Also, the number of students enrolled in special education has dropped for this school which is great.

This use of team teaching where teachers have weekly meetings to address students classroom data and behavioral patterns of students, this eliminates the need for one teacher to wait for test scores, they can now discuss the issues and strengths of students in their classes. The beauty of these meetings is that teachers are now able to address issues early and together. This also allows the teachers to work to students strengths throughout all of there classes, all of the teachers should be on the same page allowing routine and success to be present in these troubled students lives. With the use of collaboration through all teachers can learn skills with how to deal with each student. One thing I found extremely interesting is how they allowed their students to set and monitor goals, they hold meetings with students to allow them to set these goals and plan how they want to achieve them. RTI at Russell middle School has proven to be effective.

The video I chose was focused on using RTI with English Language Learners. The professor in the video explains the differences between learning to read in your first language and the second language, and this does not necessarily mean that the student has a learning disability or needs tier 3 intervention. Many EL students are labeled with learning disabilities without taking into account the fact that the student may be just as intelligent as the rest of his peers, he is just learning a brand new language not only to use conversationally, but also specific academic terms. She focuses a lot on comprehension, vocabulary, and phonological awareness to help ELLs. Clearly some ELs will need tier 3 intervention but cultural and linguistic diversity have to be taken into account before labeling anyone as disabled. I found this very interesting because I think that a lot of ELLs are grouped as not intelligent or even having a disability when they are actually perfectly able to learn and function in a classroom, they may just need some extra language support. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb2mvVgU07s

I can see that most of my colleagues found resources which advocated for the use of RTI, which I agree is a good thing for education. However, found many articles throughout my research which reported findings that the RTI program was both ineffective and sometimes damaging to student's overall performance. It seems I was able to find more articles disparaging RTI than promoting it. I chose this article because it both acknowledges the fact that RTI isn't working the way it was intended and it offers logical reasons as to why that might be. To back up her claim, the author cites a study by the U.S. Department of Education which "concluded that RTI negatively affected the academic achievement of first graders, and produced no effect at all on second and third graders." Although, the author does not place the blame entirely on RTI itself; rather, she argues that schools and teachers are struggling or failing to implement it properly. The author also feels that simplifying RTI to a 2-tier system would be more streamlined and manageable. It was interesting to find that not all educators advocate for RTI.

The video I chose for my post elaborates on a variety of aspects of RTI. The highlight of the video was the collaborative efforts by all the teachers to respond to intervention. The teachers would meet as a collective group and discuss what has been working, the progress of students, and how they would be able to help each other. Teachers in Tier’s 2 and 3 would discuss the progress of students and there was an emphasis on trying to keep the student in the classroom as much as possible. Placing students in small groups of tiers 2 and 3 actually gave students more confidence to learn and students progressed much faster through these small groups and were able to enter the general education classroom quicker. This system does require more teachers and aids, but the results from the system make for a more quality learning environment for all children and cater the learning capabilities of everyone.
