It’s to make sure we maintain our basic needs such as hunger, thirst, sex, elimination etc. It is better known as the pleasure principle.

ego- the ego operates as the reality principle. Satisfies the id without going through social disapproval. It is known to operate to take head to what is practical and acceptable.

superego- this is our internal self. This is our split beliefs about what’s right and wrong.

This could cause them to smoke or find other ways to occupy their mouths.
Anal- this stage is when the child of 18 months is learning to control its urge to use the potty. The child has to learn when the right and wrong time is. If the child does not grasp the importance of this, it could cause them to be late bloomers in potty training. 
Phallic- when the child is 3 to 6 years old they start to get in touch with their inner abilities pleasure. (Masturbation) This could be affective because of Oedipus and Electra complex. These are myths about how a son and daughter fell in love with their parent of the opposite sex and killed their other parent. This could cause confusion in knowing whom their feelings are suppose to be towards. 
Latency- between ages 6-12 kids enter this stage where it’s a calm phase. To my understanding this stage is not very problematic because they are relatively stable right now.
Genital- this is the stage of puberty. In this stage the female start to attract to males that are like her dad. Males start to attract to girls who are like their mom. This could be a problem if the dad isn’t as faithful to the mom like he should be and vice versa with males.
