War has a profound effect on the least of these. Alun McDonald (2017) writes a report on behalf of the Save the Children foundation that reflects the voices and stories of the children and families caught in the civil war in Syria. Children have been living through traumas such as seeing homes and schools destroyed, friends being buried under rubble, and being forced to leave the place they called home, fleeing for their lives. McDonald also writes about the great need for mental health professionals and the lack of professional support.

Although many Syrian refugees have jobs, Frayer (2017) reports that many do not have working permits and are paid "under the table". Because of political unrest, the government was slow to give working permits to refugees. Many Turks were afraid they would take a cut in pay, while the Syrians desired to go back home when it was safe. Frayer reported that many people were under the impression that the war would not last long. But now, after almost seven years, Turkey is starting to make some changes. Turkey is giving out more working permits to the refugees.

New Arrivals Working Group, based in Seattle, WA, and Philadelphia Refugee Health Collaborative are two organizations that strive to bring affordable health care to refugees. The authors make the argument that after we navigate the health care system for refugees, it will benefit America as a whole, making it easier for everyone to access health care.
