In the beginning of chapter 14, the author wanted to show the mood of what will come in the book. I belive that she chose this because the Pale Queen is going to something damaging to the main characters(Leon and Catherine). Maybe, the devil is the queen, and she speaks to Leon about the sin he has committed.

In chapter 17, the author had written an entry from "The Acadian Voyages". The notes explain how sinning is not a pleasant thing to do. Later, the author tells the reader that many Arcadian's are guilty of sinning.

This passage is from one of James Cook's journals. This has a great significance to the book because James was the explorer who had founded Arcadia, and established trade between the two worlds.

In chapter 40, the writing talks about "a war in heaven", which compliments what is happening in Arcadia. The angels must be all of Catherine's friends (Leon, Ariel, and Benjamin), and the dragon has to be the Pale Queen. Later the writing mentions how none are allowed in heaven, which is foreshadowing what will happen in chapter 43 (the last chapter of the book).

While traveling to Arcadia and Leon's home, Catherine relises that the world arounder her has a thick smog, she described the land of Arcadia was a very barren place. I wanted a background that would reflect the books setting.
