Together with the high bell tower of the nearby Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Colonna and San Nicola, it forms the unmistakable skyline of the city, visible even from several kilometers away.

Dedicated to the fallen of the First World War, the monument was created by the Rutiglian sculptor Vitantonio De Bellis who held the role of general accountant of the state from 1919 to 1932; it was subsequently inaugurated on 15 September 1929.

The structure, whose typology is defined as "cippo" as well as a truncated shaft of a pillar column, erected for commemorative purposes, was created exclusively with the help of two materials: stone and bronze. The first material was used to build the massive base that supports the imposing bronze sculptural group representing 4 soldiers caught in war action, dominated by the winged "Victory".

The church of San Domenico and the convent palace of the same name can presumably be built in 1556, when known documents mention a " loco de Santo Giovanni Laterano ". In fact, notarial deeds from the early seventeenth century state that the property is located on the border of the " walls of the church of the said San Giovanni " and is on the border with " the public road that goes from Rotigliano in Noia ". The pre-existing chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist then became a church, with the consecration of the Bishop of Polignano Giovanni Maria de Guanzellis in 1609; as evidenced by an inscription still present in the sacristy.
