Title: Clapping Names
Objective: During this activity students will learn the nature of syllables. Student's will clap and count the number of syllables in their first and last name.
How to do the activity: I will begin by modeling a simple word and then a complex one to see if students are following as to what they will be doing throughout the activity. After checking for understanding the teacher will model various names that range in different lengths all while having students participate. Once the modeling words have been completed, I will choose a student’s name and pronounce it syllable by syllable while clapping it out before inviting the children to say and clap the name along with me. We will then go around the classroom and have students pronounce their name all while clapping and sounding out the syllables. Once students have found how many syllables are within their name, they will put two fingers under their chin and sound out the syllables. This is a great activity to get students to practice with different words and understanding what syllables are and how they sound.

Differentiated Learning: This activity can be differentiated for students with exceptionalities as it can be done in multiple forms to accommodate the needs of every student. For example, if a student has a hard time learning when instruction is just being talked, I can provide the student with a worksheet of the words that are being modeled and provide them with markers so they can break down the words. This will allow for them to see where the syllable takes place in the word. This will allow for the student to be hands on but also engaged in the classroom activity.

Worksheet: https://assets.ctfassets.net/p0qf7j048i0q/4pPmvQGvYrjmnVwCPX0vO/907d881c9b151d6c98e81192d31d5d50/Elkonin_Sound_Boxes_Understood.pdf

Title: Say it with Nonsense
Objective : Students will learn how to improve the ability to pay attention to differences between what they expect to hear and what they actually hear when hearing poems or stories they are familiar with.
How to do the Activity: The students and I will meet in a reading circle. I will choose a poem that our class is familiar with and enjoyed reading previously. I will have students close their eyes and hear the poem correctly the first time and then the second time I reread I will substitute words or change order of a word. This class activity will challenge the student to detect the changes whenever they hear them and explain what is wrong and their reasoning. When they do, encourage them to explain what was wrong. It is important that during the game we encourage students to participate and ask question if they do not understand. " As the game is replayed in more subtle variations across the year, it will also serve usefully to sharpen the children's awareness of the phonology, words, syntax, and semantics of language."

Blending Words

How to do activity at home: It is important that when students are learning phonemic awareness that parents participate in their learning. During reading time at home parents can stop and have the child listen as they break a word down into two parts, have them blend the sounds together and guess the word. For example, " H....AT”. This activity doesn’t have to be limited to reading time. Parents / guardians are encouraged to point out objects or places when going out or doing things around the house. This will allow the child to say the name of the object or place in two parts and have your child blend the word.

Title: Blends Fish Sorting Activity
Objective: Students will learn how to combine the learning of beginning consonant blends.
How to do the activity: For this activity we will be doing it in groups after a learning lesson on blended constants. Students will receive a cut out of fishbowls and set of goldfish that contain blends for ( fl, tr, br, cr, fr, cl, dr, sl, st, bl, gl, and sc). In their groups students will work together to sort the goldfish with words into the correct blend fishbowl. As students sort the words, they will pronounce the word and sound it out. Once they are done sorting the words students will write the words for each blend group into their student journals. Once they have written out the words we will discuss as a class and review them.

This is a great group activity as you can mix students up based on their learning needs. It is important that when creating the sentences that will be used for this activity that I ensure that the vocabulary list being reviewed fits into them. I will then cut up the sentences and stick them into a magic bag that student's will draw them from. The word bank will be listed on our bulletin board and may use their vocabulary frayer models as a reference. " By having your students think critically about which words are the best to switch out and the vocabulary words would work best in their place, they will build both creative and descriptive writing skills." ( Collins, 2019). It is important that students learn the vocabulary and understand what synonyms are. I will begin by showing them the new book we will be reading. As a class we will examine the book cover and introduce the topic we will be learning about. Students will then share what they know about the subject and begin to build questions that can be asked during the question period of our lesson. During this time, we will also do Think-Pair-Share as I ask questions and they discuss with their partners before sharing as a class. As our class discussions gets deeper students tell me many things they want to learn or take from this reading / concept. Once we have read and reviewed the concept as a class, we will we write down all of the things we have learned, and the students will be able to share. This is a great activity for students with exceptionalities as they can be paired with someone that can strengthen their learning. As well they will be able and encouraged to share their thinking as no answer is wrong during these types of activities. It allows students to step out of their comfort zone and think outside of the box. It can also boost their self esteem as what they may share others may not know.

5 Finger Story Retells

Objective: Students will be able to display their comprehension of the story by sharing key details of the text.

How to do this Activity: This activity can be done as a whole class or can be divided into small groups for students to work together. As a class we will read a comprehension short story. As a class we will discuss the short story and fill in the Five finger anchor chart together. Students will need to discuss and understand the following five things.

1. Characters: Who was in the story? Who was the main character?

2. Setting: Where did the story take place? Are there any key details of the setting?

3. Events: What happened in the story? What events do they believe are important?

4. End: How did the story end? Why do you think the story ended this way? Did they like the ending of the story? Was it expected?

5. Students will share their favorite character or part of the story. The teacher will share as well.

This activity can be differentiated to meet the needs of every student as you can substitute reading the short text to an audio story. If a student that does poorly in reading comprehension does better with a partner this activity can be reviewed in small groups as the teacher goes around and provides the student feedback and additional help.

" I predict" ... / Active reading

https://youtu.be/lKWtMgMT2Lw

How to do this activity: When parents and children sit for a read aloud at home they can come up with predictions before starting. This home activity may require for the child to choose a new book they have not yet read. They can look over the cover and skim the book before starting to make predictions as to what the reading will be about. It is important that the parent/ guardian models active reading to the child. Once you begin reading discuss with the child what is happening. Parents can pause and talk about any interesting or unfamiliar vocabulary words that the child may not know or understand. Throughout the reading it is important to ask questions such as “What just happened? How do you think that character is feeling about a particular event in the story? Can the child relate to that event and the characters feelings? The child and parent can also make predictions about what will happen next and discuss it after if they were right. This at home comprehension activity will develop the child’s comprehension and critical thinking skills.

4. READING CONTESTS (AGAINST THEMSELVES)

Objective: Students will challenge themselves as they establish fluency in their reading.

How to do this activity: Students will be given a text preferably a reading warm up, differentiated reading passage, or a sight word fluency passage that is age appropriate for the grade level. It is important to focus on choosing differentiated reading passages as they accommodate the diversity of students. The timer will then be set for 2 minutes. Students will read independently and upon the time ringing they will circle the last word they read in a color of their choosing. Once they have all done that, I will reset the time again for two minutes and have them reread the text and circle once again where they left off once the time comes to a stop. This will allow for students to see their reading fluency improvement and practice until they reach their goal. This activity is a great classroom activity as it can be differentiated by doing it independently, in pairs, or having a teacher or aid help those that need the additional help. “A teacher might differentiate the process of instruction by changing the form of content delivery. For instance, some have an easier time comprehending a story by hearing it, as opposed to reading it in print.” (ULM Online, 2020). This can be displayed as having the student listen to an audiobook while reading along to strengthen and then have them try reading the text at their own pace.

References
ULM Online. What is differentiated reading instruction? (2022, August 3) from https://online.ulm.edu/degrees/education/med/curriculum-and-instruction/differentiated-reading-instruction/

Reread Favorite Books

Rereading stories over and over again allow for children to strengthen their fluency. " Reading the same story repeatedly solidifies new words and increases vocabulary.
