In the 1860 election, the Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln. Democrats were divided, with Southern Democrats nominating John C. Breckinridge and Northern Democrats nominating Stephen Douglas. The Constitutional Union Party, made up of Southerners who supported the Union, nominated John Bell. With the vote divided, Lincoln won with only 39% of the popular vote, and no Southern state gave him electoral votes. The North benefited because Lincoln, the Republican candidate, won the presidency. His election helped lead to the Civil War because as soon as Lincoln was elected, South Carolina announced its secession from the Union. Six other Southern states, including Georgia, quickly followed.

In 1861, after South Carolina seceded, there was a problem with federal forts in the state. President Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter, a federal fort in Charleston. In response, Confederate troops fired cannons at the fort on April 12, 1861. The South benefited because the Confederacy took control of the fort. This attack led to the Civil War, as it marked the official start of the conflict. Afterward, Lincoln called on states to send militia to stop the “rebellion,” which led more Southern states to secede.
