I redesigned my pedal board to help me come up with my own unique tone I was going to use on bass.

The board includes:

Compression

Mainly for utility. As to get a good tapping tone on bass and let the high tones cut through you will need a lot of compression that will make all notes almost the same volume as each other. Tapping is hard due to the fact you can't pluck and you will have to rely on the strength of your fingers to make a clear loud sound on bass so compression helps this.

Boss OC5 Octave

I had come up with bass riffs that didn't have any tapping and without a guitarist in my band, I thought it would be an interesting sound to have the bass sound like a guitar. I would pair up the octave with the fuzz to create a mix of a bass synth and electric guitar sound that sounded huge.

Big Muff Fuzz

Fuzz adds to the synth sound when paired with an Octave and Modulation effect making the sound distorted and powerful. This can make my riffs sound heavier which is part of the sound I'm aiming for in this assessment

Flanger

Originally I thought about using my chorus pedal but I wanted to be different and use a flanger sound as I hadn't heard of many bass players using this sound when writing.

On Monday night, I wrote this tapping riff that I thought would sound good on a verse or an intro.

I used the flanger effect from my pedal board to make the part sound stranger and more atmospheric. I recorded this into logic so I wouldn't forget the part.

Using the tapping idea I made, I decided to record my idea for the first song.

I used logic pro to record my bass with the flanger pedal on and set the original tempo to 200 BPM. I came up with another section for the song. However I would start from starch later as I thought:

Tempo was way too fast. It sounded a bit like I was playing master of puppets by Metallica due to the speed.

I wanted to change some parts of the riff and removed the flanger effect on my bass as I didn't think it sounded good.

For my second track: I am doing a creative cover of Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. The way i will change it will be:

Song will be in 6/8 instead of 4/4

Instead of it's sound being soul, I will turn it into an experimental industrial metal sound.

I will use my octave, fuzz and flanger pedals on my bass to give it a heavy fuzzy sound

Concept DAW

Originally I wanted this to be another DAW project so I loaded up Logic and created this.

I wanted to create the sound of an insane man running away to add to the name crazy. So I recorded myself breathing heavily into the mic and then screaming at the end.

I also wrote some new fills on bass and a drum part for my version.

But the end result didn't sound too good so I decided to make a change. After a suggestion from a tutor, I decided to perform this song instead.

In my innovation class, I teamed up with Effie (Singer/songwriter) and began working on the song.

At this point I didn't have a structure fully written down but it sounded good so far.

I didn't have my pedal board with me unfortunately so it doesn't fully sound like my final vision.

I found a drummer (Nathan Hayward) for my performance and brought my pedalboard along.

We ran through a structure I had written down. My own feedback for this performance is:

Drums need a lot more energy More use of the crash cymbals and harder hits on the snare.

Keys sound could be different. Rather than use a piano sound, use a heavy fuzz synth like sound.

Bass still needs to figure out what fills sound good in different parts of the song.

Vocals needs work

Vocal effects could do with a slap-back delay and a tiny amount of distortion.

Tighten up the timing of the song and make the tempo slightly faster.
