Staff Feedback - Studio Issues by Luke Kelleher

2. Studio-Based Module Challenges
Insufficient Specialised Teaching Assistance
The lack of teaching assistants with expertise in planning or architecture has posed a significant challenge, particularly in studio-based modules like PLAN4005W and PLAN4003W. This shortage has hindered the delivery of effective studio sessions, which are crucial for hands-on learning and collaboration among students.
Currently, groups comprise 9-10 students, leading to issues such as uneven workload distribution and 'free-rider' problems, where a minority of the group ends up carrying the workload for the majority. – Greater Teaching Assistance would help with facilitating a greater number of smaller sized groups.
Inadequate Classroom Layout for Studio Learning:
The current lecture room layouts are not conducive to studio-based learning. There is a lack of space for laptops, insufficient electrical outlets, and no Wi-Fi connectivity, all of which are essential for courses requiring active student collaboration and the use of online tools like ArcGIS.
Proposed solutions:

Allocate more UCD-based resources (tutors) for studio based modules

In UCD studio based modules are allocated co-coordinators and tutors. UCD modules have also one fourth of the students we have in CDIC (120 students per class). Training JMCs to support studio based modules will not help.

Caterina

Paula: this is something we really need to address. It's impossible to do studio teaching on your own or even with just one PhD - particularly later on in a PhDs journey where they may not have time to travel! The JMCs don't have the requisit expertise, It's going to continue to be a struggle unless we can somehow, support with some tutors with expertise. We need to look into how we could hire tutorial support in Ireland and send these staff out. Would be a cost of course. So this is one for Head of School.

Yunpeng - re: studio module support, could also look for teaching assistance from the School of Architecture of CHD. Of course, there are issues related to langauges and resourcing.
