Positive correlations in literacy stemmed from enjoyment in certain topics like recreational reading and writing, in addition encouragement also helped correlate literacy as a good experience or something to do for fun. Overall I believe that after reading and analyzing documents I think having more practice in a field and being better prepared would help get over negative experiences. I think Yancy (2009) and her idea on modernizing the teaching curriculum would fall into a way to help my subject. I believe that if she had better preparation in school with better instruction and directions she would have been able to develop more both in academic and personal literacy. In addition to Yancey I believe that Bunn would also fit well into my category of helpful ideas. Bunn’s three step guide on reading like a writer would positively impact my subject and how she's able to understand more complex topics and dissect them. Lastly, I think Werner would also be a helpful scholar. By closing the disconnect of what high school versus college professors expect from students and their writing. Having more communication between the two and adapting the curriculum in order to reflect how they could use literacy beyond high school would help students feel better prepared and less restricted when doing college level writing.

I learned that reading and writing is not something he looks forward to and prefers other subjects like math. Growing up he wasn't very exposed to reading often, and his feelings towards writing seem a little more positive since he considers it fun. My subjects' parents are not fluent in English meaning their help regarding reading and writing are predicted to be limited. He does explain how church school is one of his literacy sponsors, which is a connection to Yancey’s key point that reading creates a stronger relationship to family and religion. A connection to my subject's background regarding his family, and culture is that as a speaker of 4 languages, and having parents who speak a different language, the early development focusing on only English was not possible. Shenk (2010) reflects how parents who practice various words to their children early on eventually seem to be ahead in their vocabulary. From learning that my subject didn't grow up in a household where reading and writing were not important, I assumed that he would dislike it. However, I found that he actually enjoys reading books of his choice. Despite this, he hates reading school books and is not a fan of writing. He has developed a negative connotation of writing as he struggles with vocabulary and run-on sentences. This finding can prove Yancy's idea that people dislike writing as they are not using it creatively and instead using windowpane writing. He would very much benefit from the ideas of Yancy. I also was able to recognize how my subject struggles in the social aspect of literacy. He struggles with giving others and himself feedback which is an essential skill. I also found that my subject is proficient in using AI tools to help his writing such as Grammarly. This is connected to Anson and Yancy as they are both claiming how technology is being implemented in the educational system. Edgar is a prime example of students using technology in school.

The lack of attention towards reading can also be connected to having negative feelings towards what one is reading. My subject stated that he associates negative feelings and memories with reading due to being made to read books that did not interest him during the school years. On the other hand he has some good and bad experiences with writing. Growing up he wasn’t really exposed to reading or writing, my subject's parents did not complete daily tasks at his house using writing. They also didn’t use writing at work due to the type of job they worked. The same thing goes for reading as my subjects' grandparents did not prioritize reading as they did not need it. Yancey states a lot that some people just don’t like writing and writing as they are not able to use it in a creative manner. Murray also states that being able to focus on reading and writing is a huge part of daily life, one must be able to show creativity while reading and writing in order to grasp the main point of the texts and connect with its audience. This is connected to Yancey and Murray as they both talk about connecting with one another in order to obtain information that will be essential to learn new material. I also learned that their relationship is very neutral and there isn't a love or hate relationship. Something else I learned from looking at their artifacts was that my subject actually liked reading but if it was fun for them and if it was the books they personally chose. My subject when growing up had a writing and reading environment because their mom was in college and she would often write research papers or would even read to her at night. My subject also had literacy sponsors like there counselor who often helped them with their writing and mostly their PIQs back in high school. Another literacy sponsor was her mom because of the experience she had so my subject would also ask her mom to proofread her writing assignments or would just ask her for help when needed. This shows us a connection to Yancey(2009) who talks about how reading can help with writing and can improve a reader's writing just from learning and seeing how other people write. Yancey’s point connects to the subject's artifacts by expressing that the development of technology in writing changes the way we interpret and analyze writing which prompts many writers to question if they’re methods of textual analysis as well as understanding of writing are relevant in this modern age of writing. Additionally, Parrott drives the point even further because while many appear to be great writers by pure ability at birth, that does not mean anyone can’t be a great writer through sheer determination and experience. As shown by the person who is my subject, they are a great example of what it means to be a good writer through skill, experience, and perseverance, but also go beyond the traditional tools or methods given to them in their earlier years. There is a disconnect between reading and writing, potentially due to negative past experiences with writing. Literary sponsors include teachers and a shared Spanish music interest. The subject is confident in reading and writing strategies but feels discomfort with academic reading. This is because of the disconnect between writing and reading throughout past institutions. Hence, college is a significant change, and there might be some academic doubt about readiness within these subjects. Yancey, Miller, Schulz, Carillo, and Parrots suggest changes in curriculum to accommodate new students to higher-level institutions in terms of reading and writing. They argue that students must feel prepared and want to break stereotypes of perfect writers. Yancey depicts the literary background of the idea that writing is everchanging, which should be considered in terms of keeping up with technological advances; Miller and Schuls focus more on what curriculum should look like, as there are not just four types of literacies. Carillo focuses on why reading and writing should be taught together. My subject is fluent in both English and Spanish, and in that regard she had both pleasant and unpleasant experiences, in mostly English literature. Some of her literacy sponsors were the bible, as she grew up religious. This reading time was done with her family by her side, as almost all Catholics and Christians  pray together as a group. This is a key point in Yancey’s article. She explains that reading is connected to church from a historic point of view, she also says that it tends to produce feelings of intimacy. My subject also does self journaling. Yancey makes a point and states that reading can control the early 21st century while on the other hand writing was a freedom of expression, and in the past was not liked for the sole reason of citizens having their own thoughts. Like Yancey, Miller and Schulz discuss literacy and how students can achieve academic success when using different strategies and models. This connects to my subject, as she truly has gone above and beyond. Honing her skills of literacy, and truly learned from all the resources that were given to her. For example her wonderful history teacher, her mom who made her read at a young age, and her sister. My subject was a better writer than reader, but nonetheless they continued to practice their skills in both. They worked to the best of their ability in order to improve their own skills. Some things that I did find interesting are how my subject wrote because it was their way of expressing their feelings, they didn't talk to anyone (lone writer), and they grew up harnessing these skills. These stood out to me because Yancey's background from writing back in the day, reading was seen more valuable that writing because writing was mostly used for testing and was to hard. However in the case of my subject, they did the complete opposite. They wrote whenever they got free time and in their opinion is a better writer than reader. However this is connected to Carillo's article because she talks about how reading and writing are related and that connects to my subject. Another thing is that Yancey and Murray both agree that writing should be a collaborative activity as appose to being a "lone writer" and only thinking to yourself as a writer should exchange their ideas with other people on the same topic. However, my subject does the complete opposite. According to their google forms, they think mostly to themselves and don't really talk to anyone else for their ideas. Although this does also agree with Murray on how everybody can have their own ways of brainstorming/thinking of what to write, I did think this was something to talk about. Also, my subject also admitted that they would like to improve their skills in reading and socializing which connects to Yancey, Parrott, and Edward and Paz as they all say how reading and writing skills can always be improved. Allinall, I feel my subject was good to have because most of their trends and my observations have a lot to do with writing and how to improve and not much about anything technology related. They said this is because they started reading before writing and reading had more importance. This connects back to what Yancey says about people prioritizing reading over writing. Yancey explains that this was due to writing giving people power but it wasn’t like that for my subject. This also connects to Carillo’s idea that reading and writing needing to be taught at the same time. My subject is an example of this because they read way before they started to write. That’s what Carillo was trying to explain, they affect each other negatively. My subject’s relationship with writing is not confident, they explain that they can express their thoughts on something but when it comes to writing it all down they can’t. I also saw that they can’t connect texts back to their thoughts. This affects the way that they do on essays and writing pieces of text that requires use of a source. My subject mentions the way they do with feedback. When going through the artifacts I saw that they aren’t confident when giving their feedback to others but also not knowing what to do with it. He enjoys reading books of specific genres, but he does not enjoy reading for school assignments. He also did not practice reading and writing at home growing up which might explain why he associates reading and writing with work and just for school. Yancey says that students need to learn to read and write to understand the content they are being taught, but they also need to understand the context. Students need exposure to issues in the real world in order to understand the underlying values of what they are taught. Maybe this student does not find value in reading and writing outside of the classroom because the curriculum does not encourage it. He also gets bored when he is reading and writing in silence. Yancey explains that people used to read in groups, so maybe this student needs more collaboration with others. Carrillo talks about how just exposing students to different genres of writing does not help them understand it. If better pedagogies were created then maybe students would participate more and contribute with their own ideas because they could relate what is being taught to their own experiences and values.

It allowed me to know the disconnect she has between reading and writing. They feel like they are really excellent with reading and thus they love it which makes them feel warm. But with writing, they feel that they are decent at it as some writings can be uninteresting which makes them feel disengaged with it and makes them less motivated to do it. The subject is fine using and understanding writing strategies such as brainstorming and following any types of text for writing, they also associate their writings with expression of freedom as they do take notes just for self reflection. This connects to Yancey’s ideas of how writing in the 21st century is freedom of expression. Depending on the genre of the text, they think they are decent at it as they can be disinterested in it and therefore they want to improve upon their writing and thinking. They would also use tools in their writings for spelling and etc. This finding connects Yancey, Parrott, and Edward and Paz of how writings can be improved.
