1. Tropical rainforests are called the ‘lungs of the world’ as they release oxygen which we all need to breath. So without them we could all be in trouble!

2. If you remove trees the nutrient cycle is broken so the rainforest growth and survival system will break down.

3. Trees take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and this helps reduce the causes Global Warming! Burning the trees also adds even more carbon dioxide.

4. Loss of food for local people who rely on the fruit and nuts to form a large part of their diet so without it they may go hungry.

5. Threat of extinction to the rare and beautiful species of the rainforest that exist nowhere else (and some not even discovered yet!)

6. Soil becomes infertile once the trees are removed so the land can no longer be used for farming

7. Many medicines come from plants in the rainforest. Without them we may never find cures for diseases such as AIDS or cancer.

8. Local people need wood for cooking, building and firewood.

9. Rainforest provide nice shade for the local people when it is really hot – without it they may get ill.
