SME Social Media

Allocate points from the discussion boards to have a social-media-like setting.

While discussion boards may seem to provide the same, they are narrowed to their topic, and students must limit their thinking to the discussion question. They are necessary to learn but limit creativity and innovation.

Also, discussion boards can be easily GPTed when the student is not as interested as she would be in something she is passionate about.

How can we enable creativity, initiative, innovation, and problem-solving skills?

SOLUTION

A graded subject-matter chat room, such as a Google Workspace (one per class) that is exclusive to innovations and networking, enabling students to think outside the box, share ideas, and challenge their own hypotheses.

Hands-on Interactive Seminars

Maximize using tools like polls, interactive whiteboards, team-oriented breakout rooms, and team-prepared live presentations.

They work for me by giving a term-long assignment to earn seminar points, where attendance is recorded by participating in their presentation development. The teams select the speakers and content developers. At the end of the term, teams get the spotlight to present their projects.

West-Lafayette Collaboration

Many of us have ideas to research/test. Perhaps one of those ideas can lead to a unique discovery. Since West Lafayette is a top research university, partnering with faculty there may allow for mutual research contributions. We just need open channels.

Make It Hard

Are some of our degrees not challenging enough? Do students get most of their points for participating? We could make grading a little... just a little more challenging on the grading criteria.

In the end, it only helps the student because only deserving people earn the degree, making it more elite.

It also pushes them to do better and try harder.
