It involves researching, planning, and acting.

I chose this image because change is always happening and when the Disruptive Design Method is used it creates positive changes and leaves room for other changes to build off of one another. Page 16 of the Disruptive Design Handbook says "exploring the action research cycle of planing, doing, and reflecting, with a constant process or repeating up and through as we evolve issues into opportunities." This image illustrates that point of starting at one point and spiraling into many more opportunities for the future.

The Disruptive Design Method is not a simple step by step problem solver. It requires critical thinking and lots of effort. Page 8 of the Disruptive Design Handbook says "We do this by mining through problems, employing a divergent array or research approaches, moving through systems exploration and mapping, and the ideating opportunities for systems interventions that amplify positive impact within a given micro or macro problem arena." It goes on to talk about how the Disruptive Design Method is used to "shift the status quo and actively intervene."
I decided to use this image because it not only shows the complexity of positive sustainable problem solving, but also the "traditional" method of problem solving. The first head shows the "traditional" method by having cogs turn in the brain and finding a linear solution. The second group of heads shows the Disruptive Design Method with bright colors in the brain indicating critical thinking. The arrows, circles and question marks show that everything is connected and it is not a simple step by step process to find the solution.

Mining is a step in the Disruptive Design Method, it involves research and finding all you can about the area and problem you wish to address. Page 18 of the Disruptive Design Method Handbook talks about how "within every problem there is an opportunity for changed locked in it." It also states that "An important part of mining is understanding the problem before solving it."

I like this image because it shows many different resources and ways to research a problem. The Disruptive Design Method Handbook says on page 33 "Research is the act of seeking insights from the practice of exploring the world." There are countless ways to gather information from the world, and that is why I decided to use this image because of the diverse ways it shows research can be conducted.

Areas to Consider: Problem Arena

It is impossible to find a solution to a problem if the problem is not identified. There are many different elements involved in a problem arena, which make it difficult to properly address the issue. Pages 20 and 21 of the Disruptive Design Handbook discuss the common desire to jump right in and solve the problem, but many times the problem is not what it first appears to be. This causes the initial solution to not be as successful or helpful as one would hope. That is why it is important to consider the problem arena and learn all you can about it before moving to the solution stage.

Areas to Consider: Qualitative Research

Research is important when designing a solution. It is important to remember that quantitative research, numbers and groups, is important but so is qualitative research, interviews and experiences. Pages 33-35 of the Disruptive Design Handbook explain the differences and importance of quantitative and qualitative research. "Numbers and trends are not as personal and in-depth as the qualitative approach." As discussed above a major part of mining is going deep into the problem to better understand it, and performing qualitative research allows a person to dive deeper than quantitative research. This makes qualitative research a necessary part of the Disruptive Design Method.

While reading the Mining section in the Disruptive Design: Method Handbook the first image that came into my mind was an iceberg. Throughout the entire section the author makes it clear that there is much more to the problem than what first appears. The author even mentions the iceberg analogy several times throughout the Handbook. While the iceberg can be applied to all parts of the Disruptive Design Method the mining phase is where the exploration of the iceberg begins.
