There is a lot of dualities and repetition used in this poem. Especially the opening line "For those of us" is repeated often. This opens a sense of collective, but when paired with the the dualities, it expresses a sense of being in the middle/margins in life. In the first stanza talking about "love in doorways coming and going". A doorway is such a small space that connects different rooms/worlds together. It's like the narrator is trying to comfort someone with anxiety or an existential crisis.

A litany is a type of religious prayer that is led by a leader, with sections of repetition meant for the congregation to join in. The use of the repeated phrase "We were never meant to survive" resembles this type of usage.

The repetition of the phrase "we are afraid" demonstrates the uncertainty that comfort provides: a temporary relief away from pain for the speaker and those like the speaker.

There's a lot of symbolism that evokes people being caught at boundaries, unable to move. "shoreline," "love in doorways," etc. The third stanza also ping pongs between extreme states of having and lacking.
