The "Single Note"

Normally we define music as an arrangement of different music elements and harmonies, but sometimes the main musical element creating all the emotion is a single note. This strategy of the single note is exactly that, a strategy. By using the concept of the single particular emotions can be expressed. The repetition of a single note leaves the expression of stubbornness. Refusing to move to another note creates a voice that screams out to the audience saying "listen to me" because the message is far from hidden. In the Ratliff book chapter 6 the author discusses the concept of repetition as well. Something interesting that I found is that the argument the author used is that repetition and the one note are not neither the same nor relate. In fact he contrasted by repetition putting "a spell on you", while the one note "removes the spell". I believe otherwise, I believe that they go hand in hand because either one of them emphasizes the goal of the other one. To the right i will discuss the book's example "Walking in sunshine" by Katrina & the waves, and the the right I will discuss the example "The awakening" by Ivan Torrent.

One of the books examples of the single note is Walking on sunshine by Katrina & the waves. In this particular song the singer stays in the same note as she describes the past and the present. By staying on the same note she creates the illusion that she is no longer in love with the same guy, and because of this she can now be happy. This also demonstrates her stubbornness in the earlier days when she could not wait for the day when the guy would come to her door declaring his love for her. This is later overshadowed as she ridicules the idea of that love she had for him and instead speaks more wise of the situation and says she no longer needs him. By staying on the same it emphasizes the point that she no longer needs him and that she has no more emotion attachments with him.

For my example I wanted to remove the human aspect from the analyzation of the "one note" strategy. Typically the human voice behind the musical piece has a big influence on the outcome of the message of a song using the single note strategy. In addition the one note strategy is commonly found in pieces where they want to express a particular human feeling that is so important to understand from the song that the composer makes sure its not missed. In this song the Awakening, the strategy is completely different. First of all the human aspect is removed because there is no singer or words, only electronic sounds and instruments. The message is not as obvious as in "Walking in sunshine", its far more subtle because this song is more complex. The repeating note is that of the roaring horns throughout the piece which gives the music piece a sense greatness it makes the composition seem grand. We can't simply understand the message behind the song because the composition is made seem so great that it has become unreachable by the normal 5 human senses. This song carries a more spiritual/ transcendence, a battle cry that can only be understood by those who have experienced something similar.
