The History of Electric Vehicles

Electric Vehicles have a rich and interesting history. In 1834, the first ever electric motor was invented by Thomas Davenport. French scientist Gaston Planté invented the first ever lead-acid battery in 1859. In 1884, the first electric car was invented by Thomas Parker. Then in 1886, the first gasoline car was created by Karl Benz. There was a lot of tinkering with electric and gasoline vehicles between 1890 and 1975, but there weren’t any major developments to the vehicles until 1980 when John Goodenough invented the cobalt-oxide cathode, the heart of the lithium-ion battery. In 1990, California took a huge step forward with the Zero Emissions Challenge which required car dealers to sell a certain percentage of zero emission vehicles a year. In 2006, the big electric vehicle dealer, Tesla released their first electric vehicle. There haven’t been a ton of big breakthroughs since then which means there might be one soon, so keep a lookout.

The Human Impacts of Electric Vehicles

There are some human impacts that electric vehicles bring. Electric vehicles have a lot of new technology, some which is not as reliable as other forms. Because of this, nearly 400 crashes have involved electric vehicles within the past year. As a result of this new technology, five people were killed and six more people were seriously injured. Fortunately, these new electric vehicles have much larger “crumple zones” to absorb impacts. This leads to less serious accidents and car crashes. Electric vehicles are also silent. Consequently, pedestrians get injured because they don’t hear the cars coming. These human impacts can be severe and people just need to pay more attention on the roads and while walking around the streets.

The Environmental Impacts of Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles run on electricity therefore not contributing to the carbon footprint and global warming in the way that you would expect. The energy that these vehicles run on comes from the energy grid which comes from limited non-renewable resources. They might look like they are better for the environment but really, the energy that they use comes from non-renewable sources like fossil fuels thus contributing to global warming in an indirect way. Currently, there are seven billion tons of emissions in the air. The United States makes up for 25% of those emissions alone. As a result of electric cars, we could lower those emissions by 430 million tons by 2050. By using electric cars, we could lower global warming and save this planet.

The Economic Impacts of Electric Vehicles

There are some political and economic impacts with electric vehicles too. Since electric cars have some new technology incorporated into them, they are really expensive. The Model S Tesla is $63,570. This leads to all the rich having electric vehicles. These cars are really nice so it is an unfair advantage to the rich people. Electric cars only have about 200 miles on a charge so they are relatively inefficient. Due to this inefficiency, restaurants and gas stations put out electric car charging stations which cost $4,500. These electric cars also have to be produced. This leads to 22,000 job opportunities for people. In total, 44% of electric cars are produced in China. These job opportunities are really good for not as wealthy people. Electric vehicles can both benefit the rich and the poor.

How can we solve the problems

There are a couple ways that we can solve the problems with electric vehicles. One solution is that we can make electric cars more affordable. Tesla says they are making electric cars to sell at $25,000 by 2026. This will make an attempt for the not as wealthy people to afford electric cars too. Another plan is that electric car producers like Tesla are forced to have noise making devices on their cars to allow pedestrians to hear the cars. This will save an average of 32 lives a year. More companies can try to put out more electric charging stations. This will allow people to go a longer distance without getting stuck on the road. People could also attempt to recycle their old car parts, like doors, windows, engines, and hoods to make more new cars without having to use too many materials. All of these solutions can help to lessen the negative impacts of electric vehicles.
