Since people took a pledge to abstain from alcohol a new concept of individual choice and responsibility was growing throughout America. This led to the growing power of each individual in politics and the economy. As each individual person's power grew so did the country's political divide which eventually led to the Civil War.

Benjamin Rush sparked the temperance movement when he wrote the 1784 tract “ An Inquiry Into the Effects of Ardent Spirits Upon the Human Body and Mind”. In this Rush informed people on the effects of alcohol and showed what kind of bad injuries can come from consuming it. This began the clockworks for 200 farmers in Connecticut to begin forming a early temperance group that was made to stop the making of whiskey.

Rush was both a leader for American enlightenment and a big supporter in the American revolution. A large part for Rush’s entrance into temperance was all his medical research, so to write what he did wasn’t unexpected. Rush was also one of America’s first founders of American psychiatry.
