To respond is to take the time to actively be a part of the situation. It means assessing how one feels in that moment and determining the best course of action to proceed. For example, someone who gets reprimanded and responds is taking the time to process what's going on and, instead, approaches the person reprimanding them with calm and rationale to express their side. To react, however, is to feel the emotional trigger instantly in the moment—and unfortunately, carelessly, destroy something in the interim. For example, if someone is reprimanded and retaliates because they think they're being attacked, that's a reaction. Reaction is emotional and immediate. Responding is timely and it takes effort—but it's a lot more successful for social interactions.
