I feel like this book is really challenging to share with students. I shared it with my father and he said it gave him nightmares. It really delivers some of the grisly truths of the Civil War: the violence, racism and closeness of that war were like nothing before or since. It shows an extraordinary compassion of an enslaved person serving as a Union soldier for a poor farm boy who was deserting the Union Army. Students with whom I have shared this book seem to experience some empathy with the characters, which is the goal.

This book shows what can happen when a group is marginalized to the point of genocide. Rather than focusing on the atrocities of the holocaust (though some violence is described), Lowry uses her interviews and research to describe events based on real accounts that show how the nation of Denmark banded together to undermine tyranny and help their neighbors of a different culture and religion escape to safety and freedom.

This book is a new discovery for me based on my research for this class. I am on chapter 6 and I already love it. It is told by a child that is disconnected from society by an abusive mother because of a physical deformity. As Germany starts to bomb Great Britain, children are relocated to rural areas for their safety. Aida and her brother Jamie are the last to be sponsored by a family because of their apparent poverty and her deformity. This book belongs in this collection because it is about how the kindness of a stranger who owes the disadvantaged children nothing will transform their lives.

I love the story of Sadako because the only thing I knew about post World War II Japan was that the United States bombed Japan, and that ended the war. That was the single story I knew. I think it is so important to see things from different perspectives and to see a story narrated from the point of view of a person impacted by that choice made me think about humanity differently. On a human level, the main character is a beacon of hope in a dark place, despite her own grim prognosis. I want students to understand that we have different cultures and perspectives, but share a human experience.

In this story, there is are some non-examples of helping those not in your group. I find children often respond strongly to this. Bud is treated badly by white foster family. He is looking for a place to belong, with his father. During his journey, he sometimes gets help from strangers, sometimes he has to help himself. I believe that Bud and his travels really build empathy and compassion in the reader for children in difficult circumstances while providing some insight into the Depression era.

This book does not necessarily include allies helping marginalized groups like other titles listed here. It is written by a black author and explores feelings around the Birmingham church bombing in 1963 through the dialogue of the Watson family. If students are to develop the kind of empathy and compassion that will lead them to stand up for themselves and their fellow man, this is the kind of story that will help them practice that.

I don't think of Mexican children as being marginalized based on the culture of the schools where I have taught. I am interested in learning more about this to be more informed.
