  • They could feel embarrassed being "chaperoned" by an Educational assistant by their side all-day 
  • They feel singled out because they are constantly called upon by teachers and excluded by their peers
  • They experience emotional distress and frustration due to their lower capacity to learn and catch up to other students 
  • If they know what their disabilities are, they begin to define themselves by their disability 
  • Might feel that their learning disability in class could affect making and keeping friends due to low self esteem emotions

  • Children with learning disabilities are highly stressed and scared by the lack of understanding of the social events and exceptions in which they must function.(i.e. missing language/verbal inputs)
  • Ashamed to speak out or ask for assistance for fear of being differentiated/belittled in front of their peer.
  • They are least likely to process verbal/non-verbal information when they are ashamed or scared.
  • Afraid of others reacting to their ability to "keep up" to the point of purposefully pretending to have a severe disability to ease off the pressure in some cases
  • Afraid of new experiences overall, refusal to engage
  • Yes if they are constantly ridiculed, corrected, and have their mistakes emphasized over their triumphs they will become scared of even trying. 
  • When the areas they are weaker in are also associated with past traumas.

  • Sometimes if the teacher is able to understand what the student is feeling and going through in their life 
  • The teacher can suggest a program the children can enroll in 
  • If the child builds a level of trust and respect with their school staff and the supports provided to them. The student is able to utilize and gain a positive experience from both the educators working with them and the supports. 
  • Students can only be involved in their own programming if we nurture their passion for it
  • Adults need to make the effort to help the student get involved first

  • Struggles in the classroom can cause children to doubt their abilities and their strengths. 
  • For children with learning disabilities, self-awareness(strengths, weaknesses, and special talents) and self-confidence are very important. 
  • Encourage them to join activities that are within their capabilities and develop their strengths and passion, providing accommodations and modification to meet their learning needs.
