This book features a lot of examples of loss of innocence, between Phineas and Gene, the slow maturity gained between them and the loss of innocence that comes with age, you are bound to lose it, no one is innocent forever, the things life throws at you, good or bad, it always ends up taking a piece innocence with them and replacing it with a new learned lesson.

In the separate peace the authors attention to the stairs makes a clear symbol of Loss of Innocence because it shows the worn downess of the stairs over time the constant beating it took wears anything down, much like the soul of innocent child over time with growing, whipping it into shape, learning and growing Until it becomes dangerous and eventually harms another

"I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because of my way ended before I even put ona uniform; I was on active duty all the time at school; I killed my enemy there. Only Phineas never was afraid, only Phineas never hated anyone(Chapter 13 pg. 196)¨ This shows the maturity that he developed, he believed people came into this world fighting, but Finny he separated Finny from others in the end, he still saw Finny as superior to everyone else, this lesson he learned throughout the book is very important because he realized that the source of jealousy comes from insecurity that Finny is better than him and that he should've just been happy for him, this also comes with age and takes a piece from you

Gene and the battle of jealousy

¨I found it, I found a single sustaining thought. The thought was. You and Phineas are even already. You are even in enmity. you both coldly driving ahead for yourselves alone. I felt better Yes I sensed it like the sweat of relief when nausea passes away; I felt better. We were even after all, even in enmity. The deadly rivalry was on both sides after all( Chapter 4 pg.45)¨ This shows sudden realization that Gene was jealous toward Phineas who is a better athlete than him, that jealousy rose into something nasty and evil, the battle began to wore him down, wanting to finally put an end to this perfection. This jealousy consumed all other good in him. This is something every child realizes in their life, it's apart of growing up and losing that part of your childhood and innocent ways.

¨Fear seized my stomach like a cramp. I didn't care what is aid to hi, now; it was myself I was worried about. For Leper was psycho it was the army which had done it to him, and I and all of us were on the brink of the army (Chapter 10 pg.135 )" After visiting his now 'psycho friend' Gene begins the realize that you can fight off adulthood forever, it will catch up to you, and in his eyes, that adulthood is war and the army and fears for his sanity and loss of innocence that's already fading away with these discoveries. He sees the harshness of growing up and what it takes from you and what the world can do to you, which just comes with living. He realizes that the world sucks you from any childish innocence he has as you grow older

The Fall

¨Holding firmly to the trunk, I took a step toward him, and then my knees bent and I jounced the limb. Finny, his balance gone, swung his head around to look at me for an instant with extreme interest, and then he tumbled sideways, broke through the little branches below and hit the bank with a sickening, unnatural thud. It was the first clumsy physical action I had ever seen him make. With unthinking sureness I moved out on the limb and jumped into the river, every trace of my fear of this forgotten(Chapter 4 pg. 52)¨ In this scene, Gene's morality was lost and forgotten, his envy takes him over, he wanted to see this ´perfect' person mess up, he was tired of him out doing him, he wanted them to be even, his soul corrupted and lost his innocence because of this hatred. Gene discovered the feeling of jealousy, which is a common feeling that comes when you grow up to observe things around you, taking a piece of innocence with it.
