This Amendment protects your rights to keep and have guns on you.

Court Case: District of Columbia v. Heller said guns were allowed for self defense.

3rd Amendment

This amendment protects people from having the government force them to quarter soldiers.

Court Case: Engblom v. Carey argued that the national guard staying in their homes was against the 3rd amendment. Ruled their rights were violated by the guards staying in their homes.

4th Amendment

Prevents the government from searching and taking your things without a reasonable reason. They may not enter your home unless they have a warrant.

Court Case: Alabama v. White was a case about an anonymous tip about drugs in a car. The police searched the car they were tipped off about and found drugs and later more in the woman's purse. They ruled that the police had enough reason to search and arrest the woman.

8th Amendment

Protects people from cruel and unusual punishments or excessive bails or fines. For example hanging or torture.

Court Case: Atkins v. Virginia ruled that it was unreasonable and cruel to sentence Atkins to death since he has mild mental disabilities.

9th Amendment

This amendment says that just because the constitution doesn't list a specific right doesn't mean that people don't have that right.

Court Case: Griswold v. Connecticut was about two people that opened a birth control clinic and were arrested. It was ruled that they should not have been arrested because even though it is not clearly stated in the constitution, they had the right to have the privacy to open the clinic.

10th Amendment

This amendments says that the federal government only has the powers that are listed in the constitution and those that are not listed belong to the states or to the people.

Court Case: Bond v. United States was a case in which a woman was charged in the state court for trying to poison her husband. She wanted it to take the case further but the court ruled that it would interfere with the powers reserved to the states.

7th Amendment

This extends someones right to have a jury trial in a federal civil case. If two parties are going against each other they can have a jury trial.

Court Case: Beacon Theatres, Inc. v. Westover questioned whether a case involving both equitable and legal claims could be tried in front of a jury under the 7th amendment. It was ruled that yes it could be.

6th Amendment

Provides more protection for the accused in court. This includes the right to a speedy and public trial as well as the right to have an impartial jury. The accused also has to know what they are accused of and what evidence will be brought out against them.

Court Case: In Argersinger v. Hamlin, Argersinger was charged with a misdemeanor and during his trial was not represented by an attorney. This went against his 6th amendment right and it was decided that he should have been given an attorney.

1st Amendment

This is the amendment with the most protections. It includes free speech, freedom of religion, press, assemble, and petition. This means people are allowed to express their beliefs and ideas and create change if they feel the need.

Court Case: In Cox v. New Hampshire, Cox and others organized an informational march but did not have a permit. They were arrested because they broke the statue that New Hampshire had set up about permits. The supreme court agreed with the state and said that their first amendment rights were not violated by the state wanting to create an organized environment.

5th Amendment

This amendment protects people accused of crimes. Someone's case must be heard in front of a jury, no one can be tried for the same crime twice, no one can self-incriminate themselves, and everyone has the right to a fair trial.

Court Case: Arizona v. Roberson was based on Roberson asking for an attorney before being interrogated but still being anyways. The supreme court ruled that it went against his 5th amendment rights to be interrogated after he had asked for a counsel.
