For this activity, you’ll place a colored sticker dot (blue, red, green, or yellow) on each student’s forehead, without them knowing what color it is. When the game begins, each “team” of students (with the same color) must find each other—without speaking. This is a wonderful team-building activity because it encourages non-verbal communication and cooperation.

Split your class into two teams and have them sit together in teams facing the whiteboard or chalkboard. Then take an empty chair—one for each team—and put it at the front of the class, facing the team members. These chairs are the “hot seats.” Choose one volunteer from each team to come up and sit in the “hot seat,” facing their teammates with their back to the board.Prepare a list of vocabulary words to use for the game. Choose one and write it clearly on the board. Each team will take turns trying to get their teammate in the hot seat to guess the word, using synonyms, antonyms, definitions, etc. Make sure team members work together so that each member has a chance to provide clues. The student in the hot seat listens to their teammates and tries to guess the word. The first hot seat student to say the word wins a point for their team. Once the word is successfully guessed, a new student from each team sits in the hot seat, and a new round begins with a different word.

1. Seeing spots For this activity, you’ll place a colored sticker dot (blue, red, green, or yellow) on each student’s forehead without them knowing what color it is. When the game begins, each “team” of students (with the same color) must find each other—without speaking. This is a wonderful team-building activity because it encourages non-verbal communication and cooperation.

The “it” is to leave so that “it” cannot see or hear. Choose one person to be the chief and he will act out short movements. Examples are clapping hands three times, stomping feet 4 times, etc. All other players must do what the Chief does. Have “it” return to the group to figure out who is the Big Chief, you can give him up to three guesses if there’s a large group.

Applause, please Form groups of three to five students. One person from each group (the finder) steps out of the classroom. The rest of the group picks an object (for instance, the pencil sharpener) in the classroom for the finder to find. When the finder comes back in, they begin walking around the classroom in search of the object. The others cannot say anything, but they can give hints by using applause to lead the finder in the right direction. If the finder is far away from the object, the group will clap slowly and softly. When the finder gets close, the group will applaud faster and more loudly until the finder picks the correct object.

Caught Red Handed Marble or other small objectObjectiveDescription1. Have everyone stand in a circle next to each other with one person in the center.2. The person in the center closes their eyes.3. The people in the circle hold their fists out in front of them.4. The marble is passed around the circle, very sneakily (the best way is to have group hold one fist palm up and one fist palm down, then pass the marble from one palm up fist to a palm down fist beside it)5. The person in the center has to guess where the marble is.6. Once they think they have it figured out, they may tap the fist of that person. If they are right, the holder becomes the guesser. If they are wrong, the marble continues to be passed behind their back.

It continues around the room with each student greeting the person who just said “good morning” to them and then saying “good morning” to someone new as well. The teacher should time how quickly the students can make it all the way around the room. They can try to beat it the next day. Repeat each day for a week!

“Number Greet”

I liked using popsicle sticks for this greeting, but certainly anything will do! Put #1 on two separate popsicle sticks, then #2 etc…until you have enough popsicle sticks for your whole class (so if there are 24 students, you should have two popsicle sticks with #1, two sticks with #2, two with #3…up to two sticks with #12). Students stand in a circle, hand out the popsicle sticks. Call out a number any way you see fit (even numbers, then odd numbers…the sum of 1+1, 2+2, the product of 1x1…6x2…or just in order 1 through 12…). Students meet in the center of the circle, greet with a friendly handshake or high-five, then return to the outside of the circle. You could adapt this by putting letters instead of numbers…or sight words…or decimal numbers…or vocabulary words…or spelling words!!!

This is a great greeting for those mornings when you just need a few minutes of quiet!!! Students stand in a circle. The lead greeter begins by greeting the person to their left (or right) with a whisper “good morning” and a friendly hand shake/high five. For a Silent Greet – students have to find a way to greet each other without saying a word! They can mouth “good morning”, or just reach out for a hand shake/high five, but they must be silent! You could also do an across the circle greet where students cross the circle and greet with a whisper or with silence – then switch spots with the person they greeted.

You can start from the beginning of the alphabet (for our beginning “alphabetizers”) or start with the leader (for our advanced “alphabetizers”!!!) who greets the next person who fits alphabetically after them (ex: Kristen greets Laurie who greets Lori…and Wallace would then need to round the alphabet and greet Alfred…who greets Alonzo…until you get back to the leader!). This is a great greeting if you have a little time – and gives you an opportunity to discuss what to do if you don’t know who is next – how can we support each other as a community to help someone who is stuck…

Next, the student with the pictures must describe a picture in as much detail as possible to their partner.
