The scene begins with the hero landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. One of the most famous battles that occurred during WW2. 

Props: In order to make the scene seem realistic the film producers needed to use props to recreate the real life scenario. These props are items that the soldiers carried with them into battle. On the boat, approaching the beach, the hero takes a swig from a canteen. This canteen was a standard piece of infantry equipment, and this action of taking a drink could suggest that the hero was nervous or scared, and he needed a drink to calm himself. Another prop that everyone on the scene carries is a rifle. These weapons aren’t real guns, or if they are they’re not loaded (They might use real guns to ensure the authenticity of the scene). Most of the infantrymen use a standard rifle, which was given to all the lower ranking soldiers. However, the hero uses a machine gun because he is the captain. This tells us that he is in charge of the troops around him. They’re his men that are being slaughtered around him, and he could do nothing but watch. (This helps create sympathy in this tragic historical moment). One soldier is carrying a typewriter. And he tries to write something. Presumably, he is writing a letter to request reinforcements. This helps create a sense of urgency they are in desperate need of help.

Costume: The people in the scene are wearing WW2 US Army Uniform. This helps us identify the time period and which army it is. The costumes are accurate of the time period and this helps solidify the idea of realism.

Lighting: When the soldiers get off the boat, they land in the sea and go underwater. We can just barely make out the people as they are being killed. There is barely any light here and this represents what the soldiers are experiencing. They cannot see those who are firing at them, and neither can we. They’re in the dark. They have no idea where they are and this emphasises their fear. However, on the beach it’s quite the opposite. It’s a nice, sunny day in Northern France. This is contrasting with the conflict on the beach as t was one of the most violent and deadly events in recent history. It almost creates a sense of sadness as it would have been a lovely peaceful day, were it not interrupted by violence.

Actors: This scene stars Tom Hanks, a very successful and well known actor. Tom Hanks has been in may other successful films and viewers familiar with the actor trust that this film will be successful too. The scene also featured smaller actors like: Vin Diesel, Edward Burns and Tom Sizemore
