These creatures have large forelimbs with enormous claws, particularly on the third digit. This structural adaptation helps them dig through loose, sandy soil like a shovel. They live underground for many survival reasons. The climate where they live can be hot during the day and cold at night, so their tunnel living helps avoid extreme temperatures while providing shelter. This also helps them avoid predators like owls, foxes, and wild cats. Consequently, their diet is made up of underground insects and roots.

Thermoregulation via blood flow is one of their many physiological adaptations. Their pink shell comes from visible blood vessels under a thin layer of keratin and skin. By altering blood flow through the shell, they can release excess heat or retain warmth depending on their conditions. This heat exchange is a special adaptation.

Being solitary animals is one of their behavioural adaptations. They maintain individual burrow systems and only come together for a short mating period. This is done to reduce competition for food and space underground.

Being the smallest armadillo species in the world, pink fairy armadillos are found only in central Argentina. They inhabit sandy plains, dunes, and scrubby grasslands with sparse shrubs. Strictly subterranean, they are desert-adapted creatures.

The pink fairy armadillo's flattened, pink carapace (shell) is thin, flexible, and lightly attached to the body, especially along the spinal column. These special features help the armadillo have greater mobility underground compared to a rigid shell. It also protects it from harm like armour would.
