...Mom hated teaching. ...But what really bothered mom was that her mother had been a teacher and had pushed Mom into getting a teaching degree so she would have a job to fall back on just in case her dreams of becoming an artist didn't pan out.

Pg. 73-74
This is an example of non-conformity because Mary Rose had a mother who pressured her to be a teacher because she thought her dream job would be a fail but she refused to believe that her artist dream would be a success.

"Bad news," Lori said "Dad lost his job." ... She had a teaching degree, he pointed out. She could work instead of sitting around on her butt all day painting pictures no one ever wanted to buy. ... Suddenly one of Mom's oil painting came flying through an upstairs window. Next came her easel. "He's trying to kill me" The next morning, ... got up with with us kids and walked over to the Battle Mountain Intermediate School ... she applied for a job and was hired right away, ...

Pg. 67-73
This is an example of chaos and order because although the two parents fought one decided to make a change and use what she had studied to make a living for her hungry family.

The lenses were so thick they made Lori's eyes look big and bugged out, like fish eyes. "What's the matter?" ... Lori ran outside. I followed her. ... "You see that tree over there?" ... I nodded. I can not only see that tree, I can see the individual leaves on it.

Pg. 95-97
This is an example of self-sufficiency because she is able to see detailed things on her own instead of someone explaining it to her.

    Fantasy vs Reality

"When Dad wasn’t telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle. All of Dad’s engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert"
This an example of fantasy vs reality because the glass castle was only a fantasy of her father. It was a fantasy that never turned into reality.

"But despite all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he had created in our lives, I could not imagine what my life would be like-what the world would be like-without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had"
Pg 276
This is an example of forgiveness because although her dad put their family through hell and back, she is still thankful and grateful for everything she did for them. She forgave him for all those troubles. Although he had his flaws, Jeannette knew that he loved her.

   Unconditional Love

"Dad saw my hesitation. He knelt so that he was looking up at me. "What is it?" he said. "Ask away." "It's big." "Just ask, baby." "I'm scared." "You know if it's humanly possible, I'll get it for you. And if it ain't humanly possible, I'll die trying." I looked up at the thin swirls of clouds high in the blue Arizona sky. Keeping my eyes fastened on those distant clouds, I took a breath and said," Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?" Pg 116
This is an example of unconditional love because Jeannette () cares about her father. She has a chance to ask for anything, but she chooses that her father to stop drinking. She chose that as a gift for her Mom's sake. She said it would make her mother happier. She didn't ask for that with herself in her mind, she thought about her mother. If he were to stop drinking, it would be good for her mother, and for himself.
