Singing in the choir was a major religious responsibility, so maybe optimal visibility helped minimize error. Because lots of parties and balls were thrown, there were constantly tons of people in and out of the palaces, causing dirt and waste to build up. Long sleeves were a must during this time period. The clothing was made out of natural fibers, the wealthy class could afford dyed clothing whereas the lower class could not.
