According to the Icelandic law an institution called Vinnumálastofnun (Directorate of labor) is supposed to help disabled people to get a job that fits their ability. They are supposed to help them to adapt to the workplace as long as they need. Unfortunately directorate of labor has not been refilling their responsibility up to what people on the autism spectrum need. People on the spectrum have different needs. They are not getting job that fits their ability and therefore they don't get the change to use their capability that would benefit them and the whole society. Researches shows that people on the autism spectrum are much more likely than other groups to be unemployment or underemployment. (Baldwin, Costley & Warren, 2014). According to CRPD disabled people are supposed to get appropriated resources to have the same opportunities as others to get hired and get same salary as their coworkers. People on the autism spectrum are not getting appropriated resources and therefore being discriminated.

For example a Icelandic boy on the spectrum gets payed 50% less an hour than the minimum salary where he does vocational rehabilitation. This job does not fit his abilities, and the Directorate of labor haven't assisted him with finding a suitable job. Wage can affect participation because to participate in occupations it can often be necessary to own money.

People on the autism spectrum are defined as disabled persons in Iceland, and they can experience discrimination.
However, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and Icelandic law (lög um þjónustu við fatlað fólk með langvarandi stuðningsþarfir nr. 38/2018) are supposed to protect their rights.
A new study shows that about 1% of disabled persons have autism and that makes over 3.000 Icelandic people, of a 330.000 people nation. People on the autism spectrum have no physical signs but it affects their behaviour and ability to interact with others. Therefore influence their daily life, occupation and participation (Einhverfusamtökin, n.d.). Their rights aren't always protected even though we have laws and contracts.
