Teachers can help students achieve this through modeling of their own writing and continually conferring with students.

Now I'm thinking more about vertical alignment and cross-curricular application. Instruction can give them many chances to write in various forms and give models and guidance in revising until a "best draft" is reached.

I used to think that the state standards were complex and vague, but now I think that the new ones are scaffolded and more aligned vertically.

I am learning that successful writing is a process. The next struggle is learning how to help them see next steps for improvement without discouraging them as writers.
