Das war nicht immer so. Vor rund 13 000 Jahren war an diesem heute so idyllischen Vulkansee die Hölle auf Erden. 16 Kubikkilometer Magma schleuderte der Vulkan bei seinem bisher letzten Ausbruch an die Erdoberfläche.
Wie aktiv der Laacher Vulkan bis heute ist, ist unter Experten umstritten. Seismologen haben jetzt Hinweise dafür gefunden, dass sich die Magmakammer unter dem Krater allmählich wieder mit geschmolzenem Gestein füllt. Der Vulkan sei nicht wirklich erloschen, sondern befinde sich in einer Art Langzeitschlaf.
