One event Odysseus tell Alcinous about is the Battle of Cicones. When Odysseus was sailing from Troy the wind brought him to Ismarus on the far shore a strong point on the coast of Cicones. Odysseus and his men raided that place and eventually the main force of Cicones came to fight Odysseus and his men. Odysseus ended up losing alot of his men from that fight and they ended up retreating. (Homer lines 20-69) The Greek gods involved were Calypso and Zeus as read in lines 28-33 and lines 40 and 56. In the land of the Lotus-eaters the natives give Odysseus's men their intoxicating fruit. The fruit causes them to become addicted to it and lose thoughts of home and returning.

Pretty soon Polythemus arrives at first Polythemus shows hospitality to Odyessus and his men but then starts to eat some of them. The only way to escape the cave is to move the rock blocking the entrence but Polythemus is the only one strong enough. Overnight Odysseus devlops a plan. While Polythemus is outside caring for his sheep Odysseus gets a hard wooden staff and when he returns Odysseus gets Polythemus drunk. Polythemus asks for Odysseus name and he replies with "Nohbody". As soon as Polythemus falls asleep from getting drunk Odysseus and his men take the red hot staff and poke the cyclops in the eye. Polythemus is wailing and his neighbors come to see whats wrong, when he is asked who hurt him Polythemus says "Nohbody tricked me." When morning arrives Odysseus and his men leave the cave. But eventually Odysseus's open the sack and it lets loose a storm that takes the all the way back to Aeolia. Beings who lure sailors to their destruction with their song. Odysseus gives his men beeswax to put in their ears and to protect them from the Siren's songs. Odysseus then instructs his men to tie him to the mast and tells them to ignore whatever he may say while under the spell of the Siren's song. The men kept rowing until the Sirens dropped under the sea and their singing began to fade. Once Odysseus and his crew have passed the Sirens’ island, they must first make it past Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is a six-headed monster who when ships pass, eats sailors. Charybdis is an enormous whirlpool that threatens to swallow the entire ship. As instructed by Circe, Odysseus holds his course against the cliffs of Scylla’s lair. As he and his men stare at Charybdis on the other side of the corner, the heads of Scylla swoop down and eat six of Odysseus' men. Shortly after the Achaeans set sail from Thrinacia, Zeus makes up another storm, which destroys the ship and sends the entire crew to its death beneath the waves. Only Odysseus survives. The storm sweeps him all the way back to Charybdis, which he narrowly escapes for the second time. The Supreme Ordeal is when Odyssseus and Telemachus must fight the Suitors. After leaving Troy, Odysseus and his men land on the Cicones Island. After causing many drunken fights, Odysseus has to bring his crew back to the ship. Next Odysseus and his men land on the Island of the Lotus Eaters, where the men are persuaded to eat the lotus flowers, making them forget about the journey and want to stay. The men find themselves inside the Cyclops's cave and get stuck. They finally escape by Odysseus and his men stabbing the Cyclops in his eye with a giant spear. After escaping from the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men land on the Island of Aolia. the king gives Odysseus and his men a bag of magic winds. One of the greedy men opens the bag of winds and blows the entire crew to the island of Laestrygonians. After getting away from the Laestrygonians, Odysseus lands on Circe's Island. She tells them that Odysseus must go to the Land of the Dead to find the prophet, Teiresias. Odysseus goes alone to the Land of the Dead to find the blind prophet, Teiresias, as instructed by CIrce. Teiresias tells Odysseus that he will be the only survivor.  After leaving the Land of the Dead, Odysseus goes back to Circe's Island to retrieve his men and prepare to make his way past the Sirens, which Circe warned them about. To pass the Sirens, Odysseus and his men put beeswax in their ears to keep from hearing the, Odysseus gets tired onto the front of the ship to hear what they are saying. Odysseus and his men find themselves on Helios's island, Thrinakia. The men were warned not to eat Helios's cattle, or they would be killed. While Odysseus is away, Euryclochus convinces all of the men that starving is the worst way to die, and that they should eat the cattle. After Helios found out what they did, he has Zeus destroy their boat. Odysseus ends up of Calypso's Island, where she keeps him for years and years. Even after offering him eternal life, he is miserable there because he cannot escape. Hermes is sent to help Odysseus escape, and make is way back to Ithaca. At Alcinous's Court, Odysseus tells King Alcinous of his long journey home, and all of the troubles he has gone through.  After 10 years at war and 10 years getting home, Odysseus makes his way back to Ithaca where he is reunited with his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus. Odysseus then discovers the Suitors had been trying to marry his wife and take over. Odysseus then fights the suitors and kills them. Odyssus and his family then live happily ever after the end. Odysseus has shown great adversity, intelligence, physical strength, and bravery. Throughout the story you can see that Odysseus has show his ability to think himself out of tough situations time and time again. For example intelligence is shown when Odysseus outwits the Polythemus in the Cyclops episode by calling himself nobody and making up his plan. "Nohbdy's tricked me, Nohbody's ruined me!" (Homer lines 561-562) this caused Polythemus neighbors to believe there was nothing wrong and Odysseus and his men got away safely. Physical Strength is shown when Odyssus kills the Suitors and takes back his kingdom "How all are poured out on the sand, in throes for the salt sea, twitching their cold lives away in Helios' fiery air: so lay the suitors heaped on one another." (Homer lines 1535-1543) Bravery is shown when Odysseus overcomes his fears and goes to the underworld to meet Tiresias. "With rustiling cries; and I grew sick with fear.
