- China is one of the few countries in the world that dedicate and use spare-time sport schools extensively to train and prepare future elite athletes.
- A spare-time sport school is a boarding school specialized in sport and established to train Olympic hopefuls.
- They take academic classes in the morning and engage in rigorous sport training sessions in the afternoon.
- These sport schools serve as a reserve pool for elite sport teams at the provincial and national levels. Currently, 360,000 students attend about 3,000 sport schools at all levels in the country.

- Many issues are associated with this centralized athlete development system, including early entry (e.g., diving starts at age four or five), arbitrary selection methods, poor training facilities and conditions, inhumane training methods, and inadequate education.

- Prior to the 1990's, sport in China was completely government funded.
- Some of the top athletes had to quit sport because they were uncertain about post life retirement.
- In 1994 this changed when China stressed it was important to look at talented young individuals from schools in sports such as, football, basketball, volleyball and table tennis.
- Sports associations then became profit making entities whereby professional leagues were formed.

Great Britain Table tennis:

Vision: Grow- Increase participation for all ages and to give them a positive experience.
Sustain- Keep people in table tennis through the use of clubs, competitions, officials, volunteers and facilities.
Excel- To achieve medal success at European, Commonwealth and Olympic level.

To improve table tennis in the UK they can benchmark themselves to the Chinese talent identification and how they train. For example, they have ruthless selection methods, intensive training, train with individual partners, psychological and tactical support staff, early-specialisation and talent identification, and potentially copy the 'Chinese Technique'.

Culture: 'Table Tennis to be cut at 2018 School Games' From this we can see the Youth Sports Trust are reluctant to invest in emerging sports such as Table tennis. There is a lack of funding for the game and is it no played in school and not seen as a 'national' sport. In comparison to successful countries, e.g. China and Japan.

https://www.ittf.com/2016/12/10/china-japans-investment-young-players-not-enough/

The link above shows how Japan have invested heavily into their young players and are beginning to close the gap on the Chinese national team. However despite this, the Chinese still believe they haven't invested enough into their young players, lacking in growth and innovation.

Above shows that if Great Britain wants to compete on a worldwide stage, they need to invest heavily into the sport at not just elite level but also the participation stage to help close the gap on the Chinese dominance.
