In the face of ongoing opposition to the development, Fletcher Building said that if a good offer came along, they would be open to selling Ihumātao, but the amount they asked for was more than mana whenua could pay.

March:
SOUL took their petition to Parliament demanding government intervention to prevent a confrontation on the land. The government did not act.
April: A hikoi saw a 20,000-signature petition delivered to Auckland mayor Phil Goff, calling for local council and government to protect the land. Goff said there was nothing more that the council could do. The Māori Affairs select committee said it was considering the case and recommended the government find a way to stop the development, initiate a Treaty justice process or even return the land to the mana whenua.

July:
An eviction notice was served to those occupying the land. 11 people were arrested, which sparked a much larger occupation of several hundred people.
Within the month, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern declared that there would be no building on the land until a solution is reached. 
August: Kīngi Tūheitia visited lhumātao and raised his manawa (flag) as a symbol of peace and unity. He offered to facilitate discussions between mana whenua, who came to a consensus that they wanted their land returned.
