The first wave of Chinese immigrants first arrived in America in the mid 1800s to build railroads across the U.S. They were sought after because they were considered to be very skilled workers, but also significantly cheaper than American workers. In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed by Congress, making it difficult for Chinese to emigrate to the U.S. In 1965, this law was abolished and in 1979, China allowed for emigration to the U.S, and the second wave of Chinese immigration began.
