California sea grant. UC san diego

“Olympia oysters have historically been a part of Indigenous People's diets in the Northwest Pacific region.
Production peaked from 1890s to 1900 but greatly declined after due to pollution and over harvesting.
Larger, faster growing species, like the Pacific Oyster from Japan, continue to dominate oyster farming in the U.S.
Oyster beds provide many ecosystem benefits such as: habitat for other species, improved water quality, biodiversity support, reduced shoreline erosion, and enhanced restoration projects.
Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch classifies farmed oysters as three of its “Best Choices” for seafood options.”

Oysters provide key ecosystem services along our shorelines. They build reefs by attaching to hard substrates, such as rocks and each other, creating habitat that shelters other ocean life and increases ecosystem diversity

Oysters are filter feeders, collecting nutrients and expelling cleaner water. Olympia oysters can filter up to 12 gallons of water per day. Aquatic plants like eelgrass benefit because light can penetrate further down in clearer water, allowing more photosynthesis to take place

Sandpipers (who eat invertebrates)

Fact #1
“The tip of a sand pipers bill is very sensitive to touch, and this even allows them to sense things indirectly. \ When the bill is forced into wet sand or mud, the water displaces and moves away. If the flow of water is blocked by something in the sand or mud (like a small clam), slightly higher pressure builds up where the water is squeezing between the bird’s bill and clam. Sensing that pressure the bird knows that probing in that direction may be worthwhile.”

Sibley, D. A. (2020) What It’s Like to Be a Bird, New York, Alfred A. Knopf

Fact #2
“This species spends all day running down the beach to find food uncovered by a receding wave, and back up the beach to escape the next wave.”

Sibley, D. A. (2020) What It’s Like to Be a Bird, New York, Alfred A. Knopf

Fact #3
Regarding how a flock flies “There is no leader - any bird in the flock can suggest a turn. The other birds see a change in direction, and if they also turn the reaction is transmitted through the flock at a constant rate (much like a “wave” in a sports stadium.) A flock the size of a football field can change direction in this way in less than 3 seconds.”

Sibley, D. A. (2020) What It’s Like to Be a Bird, New York, Alfred A. Knopf

Fact #4
“Sanderlings may be seriously endangered. Some studies suggest that their numbers have dropped by more than 80% since the 1970s because of land development along their migration routes.”

Latimer, J.P. (1999) Shorebirds, New York, Houghton Mifflin Company

Fact #5
“Breeding birds have rusty mottling on the back, head and breast."
"Non breeding birds are pale gray above and white below without streaking.”

From the website - https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sanderling/id

p.s.

The upwelling is when currents push zooplankton up to the surface. Zooplankton reproduce at a very fast rate during an upwelling. After the upwelling, only around 500 to 5,000,000 zooplankton survive depending on the animals there, because when zooplankton reach the surface, they are easy prey for fish, birds, and whales. Soon the upwelling is over and the survivors drift to the seafloor.

Zooplankton Are born microscopic, but grow to be Surprisingly Large some can turn into crabs, but then are not classified as zooplankton anymore, some can be octopi and then when they become octopi they gain stronger control against current and can swim and also get booted off of the zooplankton group, but the largest of all is… the… jellyfish? Yes that's right! They can be up to 204 feet long! Full size jellyfish are still zooplankton because they still drift.

Most Dungeness crabs live in the Pacific Northwest, their name comes from Port of Dungeness Washington. According to the Ocean Conservancy “Dungeness crab prefer sandy or muddy parts of the ocean floor, especially around eelgrass beds.” BioExpedition explains that “They are a brown color that allows them to easily blend into their surroundings.” This makes sense as they live in sand and mud. Bio Expeditions further explains “They feature a very hard shell that they molt several times over the span of their life so that they are able to continue growing." Some Dungeness crabs will live up to 10 years! That's older than me!

Dungeness crabs have a lot of appendages. Describing the crab's anatomy, The National Park Service reports “Two pairs (antennae) are for touch and smell”, this helps them locate their prey. “A number of modified appendages act as a mouth, used for cutting, picking, sorting and pulverizing food”, this allows them to easily catch and eat their prey. “The pincers, the most recognizable appendage, are used for grasping, tearing and defense." This helps them defend against predators. Lastly, they state a very cool fact " Crabs are able to regenerate lost appendages."

While these crabs are aggressive and prey on other small invertebrates, they also have a number of predators themselves. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game “Species which prey upon hard-shelled Dungeness crab include humans, sea otter, octopus and Pacific halibut; larger Dungeness crabs and staghorn sculpin are important predators on juvenile Dungeness crabs in some areas.” In terms of humans as a predator, many commercial fisherman consider dungeness crab as one of the most valuable fisheries. However, according to the Ocean Conservancy although they are a tough species environmental conditions may also be a large threat, “Ocean acidification changes the chemistry of our oceans, scientists and fishermen are just beginning to understand how it will impact this important species."

I am not a vegetable, but an animal that looks like a cucumber.”

Pearl Fish 1: “It must clean inside of the sea cucumber because he cleans up the whole ocean, he is the ocean’s janitor.”

Pearl Fish #2: “How does he do that?”

Pearl Fish #1: “It moves along the ocean floor using its tentacles. It takes in sand, eats the organic matter (carbon containing compounds such as living things), and poops what is left.”

Pearl Fish #2: “Ugh.”

Pearl Fish #1: “No. The poop is good for the ocean. It helps in making coral reefs and might reduce acidification (	making the water more acidic, which is not good).”

Pearl Fish #2: I don’t see any gills. How does that thing breathe?”

Pearl Fish #1: “Through its 🤬! But that is not the only weird thing going in and out of its 🤬.

Pearl Fish #2: “What do you mean?”

Pearl Fish #1: “Well. When a sea cucumber feels threatened, scared or even too full, it will do a strange thing to fix it called evisceration (removing its own body parts). When a sea cucumber eviscerates, it throws out its inner organs, mostly through its 🤬. But the organs aren’t lost. The sea cucumber grows them back in about one and one half weeks.”

Pearl Fish #1: “Let’s go meet my friends. They are inside the sea cucumber-he can hold about 15 of us.”

Pearl Fish #2: “Cool!. Look at this anterior!. We’ve hit the jackpot, baby!”

Sea Cucumber: “What are you all doing in my 🤬????”

The end.

This is so educational.
