What is a success you have had this year in regards to classroom management, or in creating an environment that supports a positive learning community?

One thing that has worked for me this year is to make sure that I am able to greet each student at the door in the morning. Besides asking the obvious such as, "What did you do this weekend?", I have learned to ask more specific student centered questions. For example, when I ask a certain student, "How was your golf tournament this weekend?", or "How was your family reunion in Savannah?". More importantly, greeting my students at the door let's me set the expectations for students who may have had a bad day the day before. This morning greeting also lets them know how I believe today is a new day and yesterday is in the past. For instance, "Hey Patrick yesterday was kind of rough. What do you think we can do today to make it better?"

Students at our school (Red Cedar) use the color system for behavior. I've found two things that really work for my Kindergarten class. First, when they flip to yellow ("formal" warning, after a verbal warning), I give them the opportunity to fix it , and if they do they can go back to white. We all make mistakes, and fixing it is more important than going home on yellow in my opinion. Second, if they go past yellow into blue or red, I meet with them at the end of the day and come up with a specific plan on how to correct their behavior so they can have a white day the next day.

This year, I tried to establish a positive learning community from the first day by using read-alouds to teach our PBIS traits - RESPECT. (At Red Cedar, each letter stands for a positive character trait and students have to achieve all character traits in order to earn RESPECT every quarter.) I feel that this was successful because students have a really strong understanding of the traits as we have continued to discuss them throughout the year and they still reference the stories we read those first couple of weeks. I use the traits to remind them of my expectations for behavior. I also try to always discuss with them why a behavior is inappropriate and how it affects others in the room, which further establishes one of our traits (empathy), builds a positive community, and creates a foundation for all of the other traits.
