3. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The poem's tone is loneliness, unheard, and acceptance. The words that reveal Dickinson's loneliness is "This is my letter to the world, That never wrote to me,". Although she longs for companionship, she also accepts it with wording "The simple news that Nature told,". Dickinson's tone of being unheard is shown with "my letter to the world, that never wrote to me,". The poem ironic because at the same time she hopes to get out of her isolation, she also accepts her situation with stating "Judge tenderly of me!". She is doesn't show internalized anger towards her misfortunate and just wants to assess it less judgmental.

1. What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

Dickinson uses an image of a letter and news to convey the messages that are seen or answered by others. She feels silenced and invisible saying "that never wrote to me." These images throughout the poem show the isolation and loneliness she feels, " Her message is committed to hands I cannot see," She has all this love she wants to give to the world shown by saying, "For love of her, sweet country, Judge tenderly of me!" but the world won't reciprocate it back. She accepts the unfulfillment in her life which the image of a message being received, "Her message is committed". Her "letter to the world," relates to her longing of companionship but she also has a sense of independency to be content with her situation .

4. What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

The entire poem itself is a metaphor for the interaction and isolation she feels in her life, the speaker (Emily Dickinson) hopes to interact with the world but the world ignores her. She feels excluded and neglected from others. In line 4 "tender majesty," is a hyperbole. Dickinson calls nature "tender" but in reality it is far from tender, life is also full of disappointments. "The simple news that Nature told me," in line 3 is personification, nature itself cannot truly speak. She is referring to the lessons that life has taught her and how she has grown from them.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The two main themes of this poem is loneliness and regret. You can almost hear the loneliness in Dickinson's voice as she writes this poem. Dickinson was a recluse so it's no surprise that she felt so closed off from the world. Much like many of Dickinson's poem they often reflect her life. So it's clear that in this poem she talks about not having much of a social life or any friends at all.

Another theme of this poem is regret. It was said that Dickinson was often bed ridden and sick in her life. In this poem you can hear how she dwells on not living her life to the fullest. In line 6, "To hands I cannot see," she's isn't talking about going blind she's talking about how no one ever came to see to visit her when she was at her worst and how she felt "shut out."
