A community adult learning disability team work with adults over the age of 18 with a learning disability and support them to engage in active and meaningful lives. The OT role includes:

·       Conducting independent living skills assessments;
·       Conducting assessments of motor and process skills;
·       Delivering interventions to support development of skills, including cooking skills, social skills, travel skills, etc.;
·       Providing equipment based on physical needs (e.g. transfer and mobility aids);
·       Joint working with physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, and other health and social care professions.

The most recent data on the prevalence of excess weight in people aged 18 and older with learning disabilities is based on analysis of data from GPs across the whole of England. This showed that, in comparison to the general population, a smaller proportion of people with learning disabilities are in the milder category termed ‘overweight’ (27% of people with learning disabilities compared to 31.8% of people without a learning disability). However, there are higher proportions in the more severe category of obese (37% of people with learning disabilities compared to 30.1% of people without learning disabilities).

Pollard, Sakellariou, and Kronenburg highlighted the need for occupational therapy students to recognise the political nature of their roles as advocates and change agents. The inclusion and use of transformative learning during service learning rotations, has been advocated to develop students' leadership- and change management abilities.

It is essential to review current practices and communication teaching to address challenges in communication and cultural competence.
