Proclamation of 1763

The Proclamation of 1763 halted all colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountain Range. The British government was set upon making peace with the Native Americans, because they knew a war for land would be costly. This led to the Proclamation of 1763, which angered the colonists. The colonists believed they had earned the right to the land, and to settle in the Ohio River Valley, while the British government was angry with the colonists because they did not pay for their own defense. This caused a good deal of hostility and anger between the Colonists and Britain, and possibly the first big step to a revolution.

Sugar Act of 1764

The Sugar act placed a tax on molasses, sugar, and other products shipped to the colonies, along with a harsher punishment of smugglers. This angered colonists who often smuggled goods, or sold smuggled goods. This led to the popular phrase, "Taxation without representation is tyranny!" This is just one more step to the colonists wanting to be independent of Britain, or at least wanting a formal government that can give out their own laws.

Quartering Act of 1765

The quartering act required all colonists to quarter, or house British soldiers. This was a way to save money for Britain, by not having to house British soldiers. This angered the colonists as it cost more for them and was not something many colonists wanted to do. Also, the colonists opposed a large standing army, and would rather have a strong militia to deal with problems. This caused anger from the colonists, and eventually the act was repealed.

The Stamp Act of 1765

This act required all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp that showed taxes had been payed. Diplomas, contracts, and wills had to carry a stamp, and along with this, newspapers had to be on a stamped paper. The stamp act became a fast growing issue, as a stamp was payed in a silver coin, a scarce item in the colonies. Also, it was a direct tax on the colonists, falling within the colonies, and led to many protests. The colonists asked themselves, what else could Britain tax in the future, and how much might the colonists have to pay in the future for necessities?
