5. Make New Connections

Networking is such an important part in expanding your literacy skills because sometimes personal connections with people are much more helpful than your computer (which is still very helpful). When you get to know people, you begin to learn things from them. For example, before we learn to use a cell phone, we learn the basic means of communication from our parents. In order to view something from another person’s perspective, you have to get to know them first. The more we connect with people the easier it will be for everyone to excel in literacy.

3. Use a Different Perspective

When we use a single perspective, which is usually our own, we suffer from tunnel vision. We are unaware of the signals and those around us because we are focused only on what we can see. IF we expand our field of vision and try to take on the perspective of another for a chance to see things as they do, we are given the chance to learn more and gain a greater understanding of something we may not have considered before.

2. Analyze, Analyze, Analyze

Your in an English class and your teacher assigns a novel for you to read, then come back with the “deeper meaning.” In order to find the “deeper meaning” you have to analyze the text. This means you have to dissect what you are reading and consider what the words may be representing, referring to, or if they’re symbolic. In social interactions we constantly analyze words through someone’s tone, or facial expressions, because if we don’t we will never really understand what’s being said. By analyzing situations, our social interactions or texts we can become more literate in our everyday lives.

4. Be Creative!

In order to be able to take on a new perspective, or analyze a text one has to be creative. A creative mind is essential in expanding your literacy because you have to be able to allow yourself to imagine what another person is feeling/seeing/hearing, and think about the many different reasons why they feel/see/hear what they do. This also applies to texts like literature or poetry, in order to understand what is being said you have to be able to imagine how the writers and their characters experience things. Being creative is not only fun, but is also extremely helpful.

Adapting to newer resources may come in handy when trying to develop your literacy skills and with the changing times, no one wants to be left behind. So in order to keep up and stay relevant you should learn how to not only use newer technology, but also include them when you can. Technology opens millions of doors for you to be more creative in everyday life. In the classroom, using newer resources may cause students to be more excited about what they are learning because they can easily connect to it which makes the lesson easier to understand. Plus, you become ten times cooler if you know how to use a computer better than your grandma.

To implement this into the classroom, we can dedicate a week or two to assignments that focus on this. For example, one assignment can resemble students pairing up, and writing a paper from their partners perpspective of what school looks like. This can be done after getting to know one another of course.
