Debates by Holly Pottle

You will do debates in the "Online Chat" link on the left sidebar of our class Blackboard page. I created online groups there for each debate where you will post your opening statement and response to the opposing side called a rebuttal. Opening statements are due Wednesday, April 22 by 11:59 p.m. and rebuttals are due Wednesday, April 29 by 11:59 p.m. There is a written and spoken component to this assignment. The debate position statement was submitted individually and due Friday, March 13. I provided feedback on these to guide students in the spoken portion of the debate.

The spoken portion of the debate
is worth 20 points and you will be graded on the following criteria:

1. State your position and back it up with evidence, naming your sources.

2. Include your reference list or work cited list in the chat box. You can copy and paste this from your debate position statement if you use the same sources.

3. Speak for 2-3 minutes during your opening statement. I suggest practicing this before class and timing yourself.

4. Deliver a 1-2 minute rebuttal (response) to the opposing team.

4. Be prepared. Practicing will also help with this.

5. Be respectful: Stick to the issues rather than making it personal.

6. Delivery: Appropriate tone of voice and engaging. For strong delivery, it is helpful to avoid just reading from a paper or screen the whole time. Instead, it may be helpful to just write certain words or phrases to remind you of what you need to say.

7. Be engaged through the whole debate. Work with your partner to create a question for the other team and to prepare a rebuttal.
