1. WWI caused the evolution of modernism because it was intimately bound up with the shock and experience of the first World War. Many writers in the period were aware of the sense of the cohesive modernist movement.
2. Younger people pushed for greater independence and political freedom through their writings and actions. With this many people wrote about how exciting life was in the 1920's to depict from the harsh realities of many. 
3. During the Great Depression it was such a hard time for the society and literature provided an escape from trials of everyday life  for most people. Many looked to works of fiction to entertain themselves.

Modernist Writers

F. Scott Fitzgeral was an American short-story writer and novelist famous for his depictions of the Jazz Age the novel, The Great Gatsby (1925). He revolutionized American literature through his accurate portrayal of the 1920's.

Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American journalist, novelist, short-story writer, and sportsman, best known for his novel, The Old Man and the Sea. He had a great impact on other writers through his deceptively simple, but tough  vulnerable masculinity.

John Steinbeck was an American author. He was best known for his works set during the Great Depression, especially those that focused on migrant workers.

1. A stream of consciousness is a persons thoughts or reactions to an event perceive as a continuous flow. It is a literary style in which a characters thoughts, feelings or reactions were depicted.

This related to modernism because in modernism writers focused on how people talk, experienced devastation and mainly the shock physical injuries that resulted from WWI.
