  • In chapter one, the members of Lisa’s family have different reactions to the invasion of the Nazis. Describe their reactions. (4)

    • Stefan:

    Stefan threw a big tantrum. He was very mad that Denmark surrendered and he said that they didn't even try and that we barely fired a gun. 

    Mother and Father:

    Lisa's father seemed calm about it but he wasn’t showing any emotions but I think deep down he was frightened but he didn't want to scare his kids. The mother seemed calm but just as the kids were leaving she got worried and she was slumped over crying 

    Erik:

    Erik actually seems like he does not care at all. He just shrugged it off. He might not have a clue of what's going on because he doesn't listen to the radio. And he's not interested in that sort of stuff.

    Lisa:

    Lisa is frightened about the nazis invading Denmark. When she heard her dad say “Germans” she got a cold shiver down her back.

    1. In chapter two, what dilemma does Lisa’s father face? (2) Lisa's father has the choice between poisoning the German soldiers and possibly dieing or not doing that.

      1. At the very end of chapter two, Lisa has an important realization about how much the war has changed things. What does she realize? Explain your answer. (2)

    2. Lisa’s starts to realize that the Nazis are not there to protect but there to take away the jews.

    My dad is a doctor. I gave him an idea of poisoning the Nazis with a drug. He has access to all of the drugs there. He is wondering if he should or not. If he gets caught the consequences will be very bad. The consequences would affect my family too. He is worried for our safety. I’m not sure if I should've given the idea because it could put us in danger. My dad came home with a scary and sad story of the Nazis shooting up the hospital. I am terrified.

    If my father does get caught we could be sent to a concentration camp. The poisoning is the right idea but we could be in serious danger if we get caught. Abby, please tell me what is the right idea.

    Susanne wants payback on the Germans for killing her parents so she gets motivation.

    Lisa thinks that the Germans are going down to their level and just killing. She wants to take a step back and be better than the Germans. She is concerned that this will be a war and everyone is killing.

  • “I remember I was dreaming about a bee. A giant bumblebee. It was buzzing in my ear; it was going to sting me. I opened my eyes and sat up with a start, but the buzzing didn’t stop.” (p. 1)

    • She is dreaming about a buzzing but it actually isn’t in her dream and it’s the Germans on the street.

    She was delivering her illegal newspapers and she had a bad stomach and the street car was wobbling and she fell over and fell on german soldiers and got scared from the Germans seeing them so she threw up on them 9iubut all of the people on the streetcar saved her and tunneled her out to be saved.








    1. “She whispers to me, ‘That was for Mama and Papa. But it was only the first.’ She’s actually enjoying herself.

    This was when the Germans were going around killing random Jewish people and killing them or taking them to a concentration camp but Lisa wanted none of this to happen so she kept herself above their level.









    1. “ ‘No, Father, it can’t be!’ I cry. I’m not willing to accept what he’s getting at. What does it matter that we are Jewish? I don’t feel any different than anyone else, and I’m not treated differently. Now will I have to be only a Jew? Is being a Jew all that’s important about me? The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.” (p. 57)

    Lisa is getting frightened and starts to cry because it doesn't matter that she is Jewish and it makes her no different but The Germans and Eichmann don't think that way and are treating them like animals. 







    1. “ ‘I’m afraid there will be no service tonight at the synagogue,’ Father continues. ‘Rabbi Melchior told everyone at the early service that he’ll be closing the  synagogue. He’s going on holiday.’
    I almost laugh. The rabbi going on holiday on Rosh Hashanah?
    Then it hits me.” (p.62)

    They were going to synagogue that night and she was worried that there would be no service and it said that Rabbi Melchior was going on holiday. He went to escape the German attacks.
