Hi Ladies

It was great to see Lea for my first lesson of 2025. What a lovely way to start the New Year.

Lea and I chatted about Christmas and she was able to answer some questions and talk about aspects of the festive season such as food, who, what, where, when and the weather. (Salmon has a silent letter 'l' and is pronounced 'sa-muhn'.) She also talked about her trip to Paris shopping and looking at the city. What a treat!

She was not at all comfortable asking me questions but managed the basics and this is something we will practice in our lessons. The best way to obtain information is to ask questions.

I then used some common vocabulary words (see link above) for sentence construction (include an adjective for information such as colour) and corrections. We will use the vocabulary words in some exercises in our next lesson to show Lea how sentences can be put together to talk about simple objects.

Hour : singular = 1 hour / plural = 2 hours

Keys : used to unlock or lock a door

Physical : relating to the body eg movment

Physics : a science subject taught at school

VERBS :

Past tense -

'to eat' = I ate salmon with toast

'to fly' = I flew to Paris

'to work' = I worked

VIDEO RECORDING :

https://hipekids.zoom.us/rec/share/twKMskqvfPA4L8jp-nO1FlW_SY50CwSAfPQp0z7w9A_DBAkxF-TGDM9GZqpFImBJ.3J1VP5QI-y3min-D

Passcode: vNixT1^f

At any time in a lesson Lea is encouraged to say 'I don't understand' or even 'HELP'. There are no penalties for this response - further explanation from the speaker is generally all that is required. In fact, Lea demonstrated this herself in the lesson so well done young lady.

Thanks and regards,

Sandra

Hi Girls

Firstly, thank you Caroline for sending the WhatsApp images of Lea's English lesson today. It was a useful piece of information that we used as a 'warmer' to start today's lesson.

Secondly, when we ask the question 'How are you?', we do not expect the answer to be 'I am happy' - unless, of course, there is a very specific reason for responding in this way. Perhaps you won the lotto - then it's a good answer. Generally, the response would be 'I am fine' or 'I am well thank you' as the question relates to your health not your state of mind.

NOTES:

Lesson Resource = English File, Elementary p 7 ex 5 + school slide on Frankenstein

Past tense -

I saw my friend on Saturday (to see)

I did my English and History homework

Pronunciation -

Creature = kree-chuh

picked = pikt

Vocabulary -

Yes, the author, Mary Shelley wrote about something she created from fiction and that was/is a creature but we normally talk about 'the monster' from Frankenstein.

Homework:

More work is needed on the 'teen' numbers.

Hi there

After our opening conversation, Lea mentioned that they had been learning about irregular verbs in English at school. It was fortuitous that I had already pointed out the past simple form of a common irregular verb: to go/went. We had also talked about the difference in meaning of 'go' and 'come'. We use 'come' to describe movement between the speaker and listener, and movement from another place to the place where the speaker or listener is. We usually use 'go' to talk about movement from where the speaker or listener is to another place. The lesson content itself covered a variety of skills: listening, comprehension and vocabulary. I also used a short role play exercise using given phrases.

LESSON RESOURCES:

English File, Elementary p 13

NOTES AND CORRECTIONS:

My family came to my house to see me NOT I went to see my family.

Hi there

It was nice to see Lea earlier and to hear that she was happy about her dance competition recently. An important event I am sure. She must be excited too that she and her cousin will be spending time together in Malta at an English camp. Work hard and the results will be clear for all to see. I recommend that Lea spends time reviewing the prepositions of place in the links below. We did start working through some of them in the lesson today but she needs to be able to visualise them and recall the phaselogy.

Hi Ladies

It was great to see Lea this evening and we started the lesson talking about her summer and trip to Malta where she spent time at an English language learning school. It sounds like there has been some improvement in her ability to use additional vocabulary - well done Lea! Then we moved on to complete a simple test to confirm that we are using the correct course book for Lea and we are indeed using the level appropriate material and will continue from where we stopped at the start of the summer holidays. We completed the lesson with a little practice on talking about the year, dates and times. I have made a note that Lea sometimes mixes up 'teen' and 'ty' when talking about numbers: sixteen and sixty. I will remind her of the difference in future lessons.

LESSON RESOURCES:

Cambridge Quick Level Test: 11/15

NOTES AND CORRECTIONS:

to go = I went to Malta : past simple tense.

Jeans (trousers, shorts, pants) are always plural.

PRONUNCIATION:

kinds = kiynds (types)

LINK TO VIDEO RECORDING:

https://us06web.zoom.us/rec/share/lUuGZQWtmvO-OkNdRBWeP3QAt7S9WOGpsIF8ugSpI0-TLxxScDzQj1Eioc21B-OM.CbHFbMw5F99jk_IY

Passcode: .3p.HQ4y

DATE OF NEXT LESSON:

22 September 2025

Thanks and regards

Sandra

Hi Girls

It was nice to see Lea again after the holidays. Our first exercise required Lea to read a text, which she did well, about the differences between American-English and British-English. We looked at some examples of different spellings (colour v color); grammar (see you on Friday v see you Friday); pronunciation (tomato) and vocabulary (postcode and ZIP code). Although my preference is always British-English, if students use American-English spellings - that's fine! We also looked at emojis showing emotions/feelings and matching them to the correct words. We made some simple sentences to show understanding of the vocabulary and Lea did well.

LESSON RESOURCES:

English File, Elementary p 17 ex 5 - p 18 ex 2

NOTES AND CORRECTIONS:

thirsty = I need some water to drink; hungry = I am hungry, please can I have a sandwich?

Hi Ladies

The lesson topics today were all about revision, allowing Lea to assess her understanding of the vocabulary and grammar from Units 1 and 2. Lea completed several exercises, scoring slightly above average marks, but once we reviewed her answers she was able to understand her errors, make better choices and improve her scores. [Articles, adjectives and comprehension.] I encouraged her to pay closer attention to her answer choices and emphasized the importance of correct grammar. It was a great way to show Lea how to move in the right direction.

LESSON RESOURCES:

English File, Elementary p 19 ex 4 - 20 Vocab ex a

Video learning: Car safety tips; Revision Units 1 & 2

PRONUNCIATION:

aren't is not pronounced 'aren t' - it is pronounced 'arnt'.

LINK TO VIDEO RECORDING:

https://us06web.zoom.us/rec/share/yFHfOK1-x-2gSB22FzPhPexm-lVXO2-SuKKHByacsSBCrEQwwO8s_0aiy15ecmLC.3h1I5bQVGkDCSKXY

Passcode: 28@VLtp*

DATE OF NEXT LESSON:

8 December 2025

Thanks and regards

Sandra

Hi there Ladies

I wish you all only good things for 2026.

It was really nice to see Lea after quite some time and we used a little time to catch up on events before moving to the course book. A take out from today is that Lea needs to spend a little time making sure she can say, in the correct order, numbers. I would suggest some time is spent on numbers 0 - 100. We did some vocabulary work - identifying correct words, understanding verb phrases, and recognizing opposite adjectives. Generally the lesson went well and I am looking forward to continuing our language learning journey together.

LESSON RESOURCES:

English File, Elementary p 20 ex a - d

NOTES AND CORRECTIONS:

I went to Milan; irregular verbs

NOT fivety BUT fifty; counting in 10s - you need to know the order;

PRONUNCIATION:

Ireland = ai-uh-luhnd

VOCABULARY:

continents

Opposites: expensive - cheap, dirty - clean

LINK TO VIDEO RECORDING:

https://us06web.zoom.us/rec/share/7g0vBLpWPW8aJq3Art2ClEx4jg5_6EFfdocoJTNQ6Qvs7fIFC--Ye9PZ6fsapJIw.0kn6xHdq3fKZN41M?startTime=1768843858000
Passcode: ?4WtYMVZ

DATE OF NEXT LESSON:

26 January 2025

Thanks and regards

Sandra

Hi there Ladies

It was good to see Lea earlier and to hear a little about her holidays. We started the lesson with a travel article about New York and a video exercise - all about reading, pronunciation and comprehension. Then the lesson moved to some revision exercises: counting numbers in sequences and this is certainly something that Leah needs to revise and ensure she has the order firmly in her mind. She makes mistakes in both 'teen' and 'ty' numbers. We also practiced giving personal information and introductions.

LESSON RESOURCES:

New York (Q&A); revision (sense check of progress)

NUMBERS

teen numbers 13-19 + counting in 10s (10, 20, 30 etc) = VIP - must learn them in order and pronounce them correctly.

PRONUNCIATION:

Empire State Building

icon = ai-kon

enough = uh-nufh

VOCABULARY:

To introduce yourself = Hi, My name is Lea Lopes.

Hi there,

As with many conversations here in the UK, we started the lesson talking about Britain's weather patterns! We also reviewed verb conjugations in the present simple tense and practiced matching audio clips to correct verb phrases. In the present simple tense, conjugation changes when using the third person singular - he, she, it. For regular verbs the verb simply requires an added "s" at the end. The lesson covered both positive and negative forms of various verbs, including "have," "rain," and "cook," while emphasizing proper pronunciation rules for words ending in "s" and "es."

LESSON RESOURCES:

English File, Elementary p 22

Present simple: gap fill exercises, 3rd person singular = conjugation; vocabulary and pronunciation.

NOTES AND CORRECTIONS:

On Friday ! slept at my friend's house = past tense of 'to sleep'.

VOCABULARY:

Athletics

LINK TO VIDEO RECORDING:

Shareable link: https://us06web.zoom.us/rec/share/x9DMOL9URaDPn00fb8qhb_VBEoB9dIrtKFpka2u3-jnSqHzZYSFEzIfcERnEjotL.3Uc4TwRpgRYUSczL

Passcode: 1m+.=+R+

DATE OF NEXT LESSON:

16 March 2026

Thanks and regards

Sandra
