Think about your current or most recent reading in fantasy books to see if your notice any connections with archetypes. You can also think of movies you have seen!  Compare and contrast similar archetypes that you have noticed in different movies, books, and/or series. (Use the poster to help but there are WAY more archetypes than what is listed on there!) 

Make sure your response includes:
  • The title and author of the text and/or movie
  • Uses academic/literary language (BOLD it!) 
  • Shows how the archetypes are similar
  • Show how the archetypes are different

Sample reading response: Both the movie, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the book, The Thief of Always by Clive Barker have the archetypes of heroes.
In Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Star-Lord is a hero, and in The Thief of Always, Harvey is the hero. These characters are similar because one of their internal quests is dealing with being disconnected from their families. For example, Star-Lord’s mother died, and at the beginning of the movie, he doesn’t know who is father is. In The Thief of Always, Harvey loses contact with his parents when he goes to the Holiday House. 
One difference between the heroes in the stories is how their internal quests end. Star-lord ends up meeting his dad, and then realizes he is actually an evil villian, which teaches him that you can’t always depend on your family members. Harvey ends up reuniting with his parents very happily, and learns that he needs to appreciate his time with them more.

Both character's internal quests are very similar, they both want to help someone or defeat someone for revenge, Harry wants to defeat he who shall not be named in revenge for James Potter (Prongs) and Lily Potter (and also maybe Severus Snape but not that much, also Remus Lupin (Moony) and Serious Black (Padfoot)) all because of Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail) and Jonah wants revenge on Mr. Hodge who smuggled him to the future and also for all he did on "The missing children of history"

A difference is that while Harry's parents are dead, Jonah's are alive and well (apart from the part that their two kids are missing). Character's internal quest is like the same both of they wanted to achieve something, example Luke want to achieve to be free, (chapter 27), and McQueen wants to win the race since both of the worked so hard to get to his goal.

Something different is that Luke can't be sean so that's harder to accomplish, and McQueen was a famous car racer, so they were very unlike in their way of life. In 23 Blast, Travis Freeman is the character who lost something. In Toy Story 3, Lotso is the character who lost something. These characters are similar because they both lost something important to them, they are also villians because they both treat people bad because they're mad about what happened to them. For example, in the movie 23 Blast, Travis Freeman looses his eye sight and ends up being blind when he's a senior in school. In the movie Toy Story 3, Lotso looses his owner and gets really sad, and mad.

Both these characters are different because of how their internal quests end. In the movie 23 Blast, Travis Freeman kept on his life and playing American Football like he used to, even though he was blind. This made him learn that when something bad happens to you, you have to move on with it. In the movie Toy Story 3, Lotso lost his owner and gets revenge on other toys because he is still sad, and mad, and at the end, he ends up going away from the place where all the toys are, and finds a new owner. In the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why the hero is Clay and in the TV series arrow the hero is Oliver. These characters are similar because they both have the same external quest which is help people around them. For example, Clay wants to help Jessica get her justice on getting assaulted and Oliver's external quest is to save people from danger. Another archetype that is similar in both series is a wise person. The wise person in 13 Reasons Why is Tony because he helped clay get through the tapes and helped Hannahs parents with the lawsuit on Hannahs suicide. The wise person in Arrow is Thea Queen Olivers Sister because she helps him through the hard times and his external quest.

Some differences they have is that Oliver has companions/friends that help him with his external quest. On the other hand, Clay is a loner and has no friends/companions and the only friends he had was Hannah and Jeff but they're both dead. Another difference is that there is no Villain/enemy in 13 Reasons Why and there is in Arrow. In 13 Reasons Why there is no enemy it's just Clay and the tapes. In the Harry Potter series, the hero is Harry. In the book The Giver, Jonas is the hero. Both of them need to pass through quests, like Harry's external quest is that he wants to destroy any bad creature or human in the Wizarding world, like the villain, Voldemort (who killed Harry's parents) and others. Harry's internal quest is to learn, be good at school and Quidditch, have a better relative than the Dursley's (Sirius Black), solve a problem that he might struggle or fears of, and to have trustworthy friends/companions. For Jonas he needed to pass through a wall so people could remember what is the importance of life, what people usually do long time ago, culture, and the way they saw their world before. Jonas external quest is to make everything normal like it was before, people are different, because if everyone are almost exactly the same, the world will be awful, also because him being curious about something, it makes the difference. Jonas internal quest is to try to always be superior and try his best he can, being positive, and try to make the world a better place.

For wise people in the Harry Potter serie, that will be Dumbledore, because he is the headmaster of all Hogwarts school,  (the biggest and best school to learn magic) and also he has like a 6th sense, like he suspects people if they are good or bad, like with Tom Riddle, Hagrid, Harry, and others. Dumbledore's internal quest is to do the best he can at his job and to keep safe people. Dumbledore's external quest is to help people, like his famous phrase: "Help will always be given at Hogwarts".  For wise people in the The Giver serie, that will be The Giver, because he is the person that knows a lot of information, that no one knows, The Giver teaches (The Receiver of Memory,) Jonas about important things and what does he needs to do, like to see different colors than white, grey, and black.]]> 2017-05-17 22:13:42 UTC https://padlet.com/erica_woodson/btc0kuj27nna/wish/172450922 2024_dhernandez https://padlet.com/erica_woodson/btc0kuj27nna/wish/172451995 An Archetype in the Shadow children by Margaret Peterson and The NetherGrim is the character Luke and Tristan because I think they represents a Hero. I think this because in the story The shadow children Luke has been very stressed and worried about school because since he has never been in school he will maybe fail. He is a Hero because he is doing hard work to concentrate and learn and I think he is trying his best to not get bullied. In The NetherGrim it is similar because Tristan is very stresses out and since he saw all his friend workers die he is going through a hard time. He is a hero because even when he is stressed he tries his best to help everyone an defeat the NetherGrim.

The difference of the Archetype of the book is that in the book The NetherGrim Tristan is trying to save people from a villain and is trying to save a lot of people. In The shadow children Luke is trying to learn in school. They both represent a troubled system, because in the Harry Potter series, there's the Ministry of Magic, where some disasters are hidden from the public to stop panic, then Harry and his friends have to save the world without the troubled minister's help with the aurors, and in the Percy Jackson Series, there's the Gods of Olympus who try to get everything organized but they have to turn mortals, or their children. The choices by the Ruling Power, or Government affect the Quest Structure, because the heroes have to work without them to stop the villains.
They are different because in Harry Potter the Government, or ruling power wants to keep in power, and steps out of the way to let the Order of the Phoenix defeat Voldemort. Harry Potter represents good, many times he fights against the evil which is Voldemort, in this specific book Harry's friend Diggory fights against Voldemort and gets killed this really connects to the archetype good against evil. Harry's external quest is filled with moments containing good guys and bad guys. In Snow White, there is a lot of good vs evil moments like when Snow White fights against the evil queen and against the dragon (that can represent problems).

Both Snow White and Harry (also Harry's friends) are brave and they represent a lot of good vs evil. They both have the courage to fight and they both end up winning like most of the good characters in books/movies. They also have a lot of emotions in their internal quests like Snow White's father suffering because of the evil witch and Harry Potter's parents getting killed by Voldemort. I believe that it encouraged them to fight and to braver.

Percy Is the hero and Chiron is The wise person  and his companions are Tyson and  Annabeth for me  The villans are His Step father Gabe (smelly gabe) and Hades.

This reminds me of the movie The karate kid  because it's also good vrs bad and  there is a hero ( The Hero) Daniel,  his companion, Ally, Mr Myagi is the wise person  and the villans are the cobra kai students and teacher.  I relate Daniel and Percy because there internal quest is to be brave and don't give up and they want to stopped being bullied  I relate Chiron with Mr. Myagi because they always belive in them no matter what and they are giving their students tips. 
I relate Annabeth and Tyson with Ally because they are always giving power to one another and encouraging them.

I relate the cobra kai students and teacher with  His Step father Gabe (smelly gabe)  and Hades . I relate them because they are always giving bad vibes and trying to mess with them and make them ,and and they are pushing the hero to do bad decisions.

The villains in the BFG are the giants, and in George Marvelous Medicine is the grandma. They are similar because they are both mean and don't have considerations in others. They think they're the only important people, for example in the BFG the greedy giants eat humans instead of other things. In George Marvelous Medicine the grandma asks for George everything. She never went for her things, she was very lazy.

The heroes in the BFG are Sophie and the BFG, and in George Marvelous Medicine the hero is George because he did the medicine. Something they have in common is that they are hard workers. They try to fix their problem. In Among the Betrayed, Luke is the hero, and in Percy Jackson , Percy is the hero. They are similar a because of what happened to they learned  about it, they got betrayed. For example Luke got betrayed by Jayson and Percy got betrayed by Luke, they both learned for the betrayal the they had to be more careful with who they trust.
One difference between heroes in the stories is how reacted to their betrayal , Percy felt sad, and stupid and Luke felt angry and aggressive.

The archetypes Jen and Mr. Talbot are so similar that they end up being equal and another similarity in the archetypes is that Jen and Luke are both third children. The characters are similar because they are dealing with issues in family. For example In Matilda her parents do not let her read books and, George is trying to deal with his grumpy old grandma. One difference between with these two characters is that, in the book Matilda she ends up living with her teacher and having magical powers. This is connected to the movie Star Wars because the archetype in Star Wars is Darth Vader because he is like Luke, they both represent evil and madness, So whenever you see them it is always something bad not good.

Compared to Percy Jackson and Luke Skywalker represent the good side that defeat the villains, and almost always win when it's good vs evil. So whenever I see them I feel better after seeing what the villains are up to. In Boss Baby, the villain is the Boss Baby and his mission is to get parents to love babies more than puppies and he doesn't like his "brother", and then they get along with each other and with the puppies. (the kid and the baby). Parents don't know Boss Baby is a boss.

In Phineas and Ferb, the villain is Doofenshmirtz, and his mission is to take over tristate area. Then, in the last episode, Phineas, Ferb, and Perry get along with him. Phineas and Ferb discover Perry is a secret agent and that fights vs Doofenshmirtz.

The differences are that in Boss Baby, the parents never know that the baby is an "Adult", and in Phineas and Ferb, they discover that Perry fight vs Doofenshmirtz.

In the story and the movie, The heroes, ( Peter Quill, and Harry Potter) have done great achievements in past times. These heroes have similarities like, they both lost loved ones, and almost lost more. In the Harry Potter franchise, Lilly and James Potter die by the evil forces of Voldemort. ( shudder, shudder)In The Guardians of The Galaxy 2, Peter's mom dies by a tumor in her head.
These Heroes are different, because their external and internal quests. Star Lord's internal quest is of happiness at first, then it turns to pure protection/love. The one that has the internal quest in Guardian of the Galaxy is Peter Quill. And the on that has the internal quest in Percy Jackson is Percy. There internal quests are similar because, Percy losses his mom and Peter losses his mom. Because, in the story because they both end up saving people, in Kung Fu Panda 2/1 it's all, weird, animal, China. But in the Flash it's Central City.

Both these stories may seem different but they're very much similar.  Like their internal quests are similar, they both try to avenge the death of their parent and strangely it's both moms.

In Harry Potter, Harry has 2 close friends, Hermione and Ron. Harry's internal quest (a theme is to appreciate your friends) is that he thought he wouldn't have friends, but he actually had a lot and had Hermione and Ron who are his best friends always help him with everything.

In the movie the BFG, the little girl is an orphan and made a friend, a Big Friendly Giant. The little girls name is Sophie. Sophie's internal quest (a theme is to give an opportunity to the rest) is she thought the giant would've eaten her, but she gave him a chance and they became REALLY close friends and made a lot of adventures together.

  In The Witches all the witches have the power over regular humans because they can make magical potions and can make evil spells with their magical powers. In Georges Marvelous Medicine George has the power over grandma because he invented this wonderful medicine and he decides how much the grandma drinks to control her height. Even though his grandma is not very happy someone as innocent ,and small as George to control her.
These books are also different because in The witches the little boy ends up being the hero when he saves all the children in England, and destroys all the witches in England including the Grand High Witch. in the Magician's Nephew the wise person or in this case animal is Aslan and in the movie The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe the wise person is the Professor. These characters are similar because they both help the the heroes complete their mission. 

The wise characters in this book and movie are different because Aslan basically knew every thing about Narnia, but the Professor didn't know that the wardrobe was magic, but still said that since Lucy was always a very truthful girl she must not be making things up.

In Stranger Things the hero is 11 and her internal quest is to free Willy from the monster. Moana’s internal quest is to go to the ocean and help the people in her tribe. They both want to save someone by having an adventure. 

The difference between these two is that 11 did not seem like she was a hero at first and in Moana we knew she was a hero from the beginning of the movie.

Luke and Anakin have the same external quest to defeat the The Sith, because both are Jedi, and as a Jedi it is your duty to crush the Sith.

The internal quest is different, because Anakin is struggling with himself if he should join the Dark Side or stay a Jedi. For Luke it is always clear that he wants to be a Jedi,.
