Lovatt and Lilly wanted to teach Peter how to understand and communicate in English. Lovatt gave Peter two lessons a day and primarily focused on greetings. A lot of the focus of the research involved training Peter to be able to discriminate between human sounds and dolphin sounds. After being able to discriminate between the two they wanted Peter to be able to produce those humanoid sounds. Lovatt worked with Peter to try to get him to make the "M" sound for her name.
S.H.

Margaret Howe Lovatt

Margaret Howe Lovatt was a twenty two year old college dropout who took part of the study for a sense of adventure. She volunteered to help teach the three dolphins (Peter, Pamela, and Sissy) at the facility English. This later progressed into creating an area where Margaret would be able to live in and observe one of the dolphins at the same time. There Margaret choose the juvenile Peter to live with and teach. However, during the lessons, Peter was not entirely focused. Peter at that time was sexually coming of age, therefore he was more interested in being closer to Margaret then his English lessons. Peter would occasionally rub himself on her thighs, hands and feet. Due to Peter's constant sexual urges, Margaret at first decided to send Peter up an elevator to the other female dolphins. But as time progressed, Margaret believed it would be easier and more time saving if she was to satisfy Peter's needs by herself. She would later describe these moments as, "It wasn’t sexual on my part. Sensuous perhaps. It seemed to me that it made the bond closer."
K.L

In the 1960s, a group called "The Order of the Dolphin" emerged in search of extraterrestrial intelligence. Belonging to this group were a young Carl Sagan and an eccentric neuroscientist named Dr. John Lilly. Lilly's Man and Dolphin sparked the focus on human-dolphin interspecies communication. Not too long after, an astronomer named Frank Drake also teamed up with the Order and made funding from NASA for this project a possibility. Another critical individual of this study was a dolphin-enthusiast by the name of Margaret Howe Lovatt. Her admiration, attachment, and dedication to dolphins took this research to unforeseeable heights. Although discovering a communication bridge between humans and any other species would be impressive, the considerable amounts of similarities between humans and dolphins is the determinant factor to why dolphins are the focus of this study.

R.P

This experiment was funded by NASA, informally known as The Dolphin House. This experiment consisted of 3 dolphins, one of which was in an isolation tank. Peter the dolphin was chosen to lean how to speak English with Lovatt. However, the experiment took an unexpected turn from Peter's behalf. This lead Lilly to seek the effects of LSD on the dolphins. Although none of the dolphins were able to learn English, researchers concluded the the dolphins were 70% more vocal after the LSD had been administered. Due to alarming signs of animal safety all the lab funding was pulled therefore ending the experiments. Unfortunately, Peter committed suicide due to being separated from Lovatt.
-G.R
